Then the Klaus Tschira Foundation is the right place for you. Our aim is to ensure that our funding projects have the greatest possible impact on research and society – which is why we ask that you adhere to the following application criteria: We only support non-profit and scientific institutions that can provide proof or recognition from the tax office (notice of exemption – “Freistellungsbescheid”).

We do not fund private individuals, competition entries or theses. Our focus is on projects from the German-speaking region. In the case of applications involving multiple cooperation partners, the main applicant institution must be based in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland.

The funds are to be used exclusively for a specific purpose. Clinical studies are not funded. Research proposals must be submitted in English only.

In the areas of education and science communication, however, we only accept applications in German. We are pleased if your application clearly demonstrates that both the applicants and the project are excellently positioned. This includes broad anchoring in your project environment, a long-term impact, a realistic time and financial implementation, and a plan for communicating your project.

Clearly defined and measurable milestones are important, as are your plans for evaluating the desired results. The expertise and diversity of your team is just as relevant as the consideration of environmental sustainability. Applicants who are proven to have engaged in academic misconduct may be excluded from project funding.

The Klaus Tschira Foundation supports the code of conduct >Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Research Practice< of the German Research Foundation DFG. We want to support our applicants as unbureaucratically as possible. We have therefore set up a flexible, multi-stage application process that is adapted depending on the scope of the project.

We reserve the right to call in external experts if necessary. Please also note the individual requirements of the respective funding line. You are also welcome to let us know if you would like to exclude individual persons as reviewers due to potential conflicts of interest.

After a positive initial review, we may invite you for a virtual pitch or a written full proposal. Depending on the complexity, scope, and content of your project, a further, more detailed review may be necessary. In such cases, we offer you the opportunity to present your application to us and, potentially, reviewers in a virtual pitch.

We reserve the right to contact you in this regard if necessary. You will receive information about the pitch procedure by email. Please structure your 30-minute slide-based pitch presentation in such a way that the reviewers can assess the project according to the evaluation matrix ( >download here< ).

If you would prefer a detailed project description in the form of a written full proposal, please let us know. It is possible in exceptional cases. If your application is approved, you will receive a written confirmation with information on the funding >terms and conditions< and documents on project implementation (request for funds – “Mittelanforderung”, and proof of use – “Verwendungsnachweis”).

Our Communications team is happy to work closely with you to share information about funding decisions and project results with the public. The team will contact you accordingly. All public relations work in connection with the funded project must be coordinated with the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
