Recovery Runs on Relationships Built Long Before the Disaster Hits Back in February, Former FEMA Administrator and Bright Harbor’s President Pete Gaynor and I were joined by Melissa Hensley of NRG Energy at the Granting Hope Summit hosted by our friends at the Emergency Assistance Foundation when a corporate social responsibility leader asked a simple question: I've been thinking about that question ever since.

Over the last several months, we’ve spent time with corporate leaders, emergency managers, nonprofit executives, funders, and community organizations. What I'm seeing is encouraging. More people are starting to recognize that recovery isn't mainly a funding challenge.

It's a coordination and relationship challenge. Much of EAF’s work is done through the ongoing administration of its 350+ employee relief funds, each sponsored by a company – ALDI, Experian, Mattress Firm Inc., Travel + Leisure Co. , and Quest Diagnostics ® among them – to support its team members who are impacted by unforeseen disasters and personal hardships.

The Foundation Providing Quick Disaster Relief in LA and Beyond When 80-mile-per-hour wildfires decimated much of the Pacific Palisades and Altadena on January 7, Doug Stockham was ready to give cash for whatever people needed: a hotel room, a meal, a change of clothes and underwear. But he couldn’t.

Not because the Emergency Assistance Foundation, the charity he runs, wasn’t prepared to provide cash to Southern Californians suddenly rendered homeless. EAF needed to wait a day until President Biden declared Los Angeles County a major disaster area.

Then, Stockham and his colleagues began evaluating and disbursing $500 to $2,000 grants through its rapid system of emergency relief, based on the recognition that 37 percent of U.S. adults are unable to cover an unforeseen cost of $400.

Not long ago, the EAF began chipping away at its check problem with the help of an unlikely partner — the 105-year-old check-printing company Deluxe Corp.
