Lacuna Fund exists to fix a specific and badly under-addressed failure in the AI supply chain: labelled training data for low- and middle-income contexts largely does not exist, which means models trained on globally available corpora underperform precisely where the need is greatest.
Rather than funding models, Lacuna funds the datasets - open, accessible, machine learning ready - across four domains: Agriculture, Language, Health and Climate. Award sizes are set per domain and per call rather than programme-wide, and the published pools give a clear picture of what a competitive budget looks like.
The Antimicrobial Resistance call ran an approximately USD 1,000,000 pool anticipating 3 to 4 projects under USD 100,000 alongside 1 to 3 larger projects at USD 200,000 to 300,000.
