The funding is designed to support projects that research, protect, and restore the health of Lake Erie. Local governments, research institutions, and nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply for up to $50,000 for projects that will improve water quality, restore habitats, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of Lake Erie.
Proposals need to align with the priorities of the 2025 Lake Erie Protection and Restoration Plan, which outlines key priorities of the Commission agencies to address harmful algal bloom reduction, nutrient management, habitat and wetland restoration, and beneficial reuse of dredged sediment. Applications, grant guidelines, submission materials, and information on where to submit proposals can be found on the LEPFwebsite.
Selected grant recipients will be notified in April 2026. Funding for the Lake Erie Protection Fund is made possible through the sale of specialty Lake Erielicense plates and tax-deductible donations. The Commission offers four plates of different designs, through the BMV, and $15 from every plate sold goes towards the LEPF.
