Life Cycle and Techno-Economic Analysis of Integrated Enhanced Rock Weathering and Biochar Soil Amendments - Kleinman Center for Energy Policy Life Cycle and Techno-Economic Analysis of Integrated Enhanced Rock Weathering and Biochar Soil Amendments Jennifer Wilcox | July 1, 2025 Agriculture , Greenhouse Gas Removal This project proposes a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) of an integrated soil amendment approach combining Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) and biochar derived from agricultural waste in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
ERW and biochar provide long-term carbon storage and multiple agricultural benefits, including nutrient supply, improved soil health, and reduction in fertilizer-related emissions. The project will quantify total greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation—CO₂, N₂O, and CH₄—and assess economic viability and scalability.
The results will guide policy recommendations, clarifying definitions for carbon dioxide removal versus emissions mitigation, and propose strategies to incentivize local adoption.
Outcomes include robust data to enhance Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) frameworks, inform sustainable agricultural practices, support local and circular food systems, and integrate these approaches into corporate Scope 3 emissions reduction strategies. This grant is made possible by the Goldsmith Research Fund, a gift from Carl H. Goldsmith (W ‘88 ).
