Respite Voucher Programs, also known as stipend, grant, or reimbursement programs, make funds available through self-direction to help family caregivers pay for respite care. Such programs empower family caregivers by giving them control in selecting, hiring, and if they choose, training their own respite providers. In some states, payments can also be made directly to the respite provider or agency chosen by the family caregiver.
The voucher programs on this map are funded through the Lifespan Respite Care program or are state-funded. There may be other programs in the state that pay for respite through self-directed respite vouchers, stipends, reimbursement or grant programs for specific populations, such as the National Family Caregiver Support Program, Medicaid waivers, or the Veteran Directed Care Program.
