Gallagher Travel Grants Gallagher Travel Grants are awarded annually by the ASR to members of the Association living outside the U.S. and Canada and to U.S. & Canadian graduate student and early-career members who seek funds to help defray the cost of to attend the Annual Meeting and to present their research. Robert J. McNamara Student Paper Award The McNamara Student Paper Award, in the form of a certificate of honor and a monetary grant, is given annually by ASR to recognize an outstanding paper in the sociology of religion written by a graduate student member of the Association. The award is intended to encourage, recognize, and support outstanding scholarship by our student members.

Distinguished Sociology of Religion Journal Article Award The Distinguished Article Award, in the form of a certificate of honor and a monetary grant, is given annually by ASR to recognize the most outstanding journal article published in ASR’s journal Sociology of Religion . The award is intended to encourage, recognize, and support outstanding scholarship submitted to our journal.

No nominations are needed for this award. Click HERE for details . Paul Hanly Furfey Lecture The Paul Hanly Furfey Lecture is given annually in honor of Monsignor Paul Hanly Furfey (1896-1992), who served as ASR’s seventh president in 1944.

Father Furfey was a priest and professor of sociology at The Catholic University of America, where he became known for his broad intellectual interests, his passion for civil rights and social justice, and his insistence on the use of rigorous social scientific methods.

The earliest lectures in honor of Father Furfey were delivered at The Catholic University of America by Robert Bellah (1974), Benton Johnson (1975), Gordon Zahn (1976), Talcott Parsons (1977), Robert Drinan (1978), Suzanne Keller (1979), and David Moberg (1980). The Furfey lecture was entrusted to ASR in 1981 “to continue Furfey’s tradition of excellence. ” It is a high point of the meeting and is published in Sociology of Religion.

Recent lecturers include Immanuel Wallerstein, Robert Wuthnow, Ann Swidler, Jose Casanova, Nancy Ammerman, and François Gauthier. The current ASR President decides on a Furfey Lecturer.
