is an innovative community-driven program that partners with SDPD and auto service providers to replace tickets with repair vouchers. To strengthen police-community relations, this program stimulates positive interactions between police officers and the communities they serve, working to restore trust and solve problems. The Lights On!
program provides automobile bulb repair vouchers instead of traffic tickets to strengthen police-community relations. When an officer observes a vehicle with a lighting-related equipment violation (e.g., brake light(s) not functioning, headlight out, etc.), and they conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, they will issue a voucher instead of a citation for the violation.
The voucher can then be used at a participating auto location for a repair of up to $250. The participating auto location will then be reimbursed by the Lights On! program for the repair amount once they submit the voucher and invoice for repairs.
All monies contributed by the Department for the program are matched by the Lights On! organization. SDPD is implementing this program collaboratively with the San Diego Sheriff’s Office, Chula Vista PD, and National City PD.
