Linguistic Institute Fellowships is sponsored by Linguistic Society of America (LSA). Provides tuition support for LSA student members to attend the Linguistic Institute.

Linguistic Institute Fellowships Linguistic Institute Fellowships Linguistic Institute Fellowships The LSA administers the biennial fellowship competition and provides dedicated funds to assist LSA Student Members in attending the Linguistic Institute. Applications for the 2025 LSA Linguistic Institute Fellowships are now closed. You must be an LSA member to apply for a Linguistics Institute Fellowship.

Not a member yet? Join the LSA and help us advance the scientific study of language. Unless otherwise specified, applicants are welcomed from both undergraduate and graduate students.

Graduate students should not have received their Ph. D. before the completion of the Institute.

Applicants do not need to be U.S. citizens, however, applicants will be responsible for any visas and/or other documentation necessary to allow them to attend. The primary language of interaction and instruction is English. For that reason, proficiency in English is a requirement for fully enjoying the benefits of the program.

Previous recipients of a Linguistic Institute fellowship are not eligible to apply. Successful recipients must enroll in four or more courses during the 4+ weeks of the Institute. Fellowship awards are not transferable, redeemable for cash, nor can they be rolled over to another year.

Fellowships offered in 2025 1. General Institute Fellowship – 12 awards of $2,500 The award provides tuition support for LSA student members to attend the Institute. 2.

Charles Fillmore Student Fellowship – one award of up to $2,500 This fellowship is named in honor of the late Charles Fillmore, a former President of the LSA. Applicants must specialize in one of the following subfields: corpus linguistics, semantics, construction grammar, frame semantics, or computational linguistics. Preference is given to applicants from the University of Minnesota, where Fillmore received his BA in Linguistics.

The award provides tuition support for a graduate student to attend the Institute. 3. Yuki Kuroda Fellowship – one award of up to $4,500 Established in memory of LSA member and pre-eminent scholar of Japanese linguistics, Yuki Kuroda.

Applications are open to LSA student members who study the linguistics of Japanese and who are currently living or studying in Japan. Preference will be given to students who have not started a graduate program in linguistics in the United States. The award can be used to cover tuition, travel, room and board.

4. Bernard and Julia Bloch Fellowship – one award of up to $3,500 Established from the Julia Bloch Memorial Fund, the Bernard and Julia Bloch fellowship was first awarded in the summer of 1970. Applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students.

Applicants cannot be from the host of the Linguistics Institute. Preference is given to students who have a deep and personal connection or personal commitment to an Indigenous community of the Americas or the historically United States-affiliated Pacific and who are engaged in scholarship focused on the language(s) of that community. The award can be used to cover tuition, travel, room and board.

5. Ivan Sag Linguistic Institute Fellowship – one award of up to $2,500 Established in 2014 in honor of our late colleague Ivan Sag, by contributions from LSA members, colleagues, and friends, this fellowship is designed to recognize an exceptionally promising linguist who will go beyond regular institute participation, exhibiting the kind of inclusiveness, generosity, and energy that made Ivan Sag who he was.

The Sag Fellowship was awarded for the first time at the 2015 Linguistic Institute. Applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students. The award can be used to cover tuition, travel, room and board.

6. James McCawley Fellowship – one award of up to $2,500 The James McCawley Fellowship is made possible through contributions to the James McCawley Memorial Fund, established in 1999.

Applicants must be either 1) a graduate from the University of Chicago, where McCawley attended, or 2) a graduate student who has substantial lived experience in one of the following Asian countries: Burma, Cambodia, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The award can be used to cover tuition, travel, room and board. 7.

Ken Hale Student Fellowship – one award of up to $3,200 The Ken Hale Student Fellowship will be awarded to a graduate student who is pursuing a course of study to document endangered languages and work with communities toward their preservation. The first Hale student fellowship was awarded at the 2017 Linguistic Institute at the University of Kentucky, Lexington. The award can be used to cover tuition, travel, room and board.

8. Warren Cowgill Fellowship – one award of up to $2,500 The Warren Cowgill Fellowship was established by his family to support an undergraduate student who has the potential to bring insights and experiences to the scientific study of language from communities that have been traditionally marginalized and under-represented in the field of linguistics.

Those communities may include but are not limited to first generation scholars, economically marginalized communities, communities for whom their traditional language is not broadly used, and underrepresented racial/ethnic communities. The award can be used to cover tuition, travel, room and board.
