They provide the rooms and the light and the microphones for writers and readers to continue hearing and seeing each other, experiencing the freeing art of written language together that keeps us thinking, feeling, and human. ” “In their DNA, [literary arts] organizations protect the strange, the difficult, the experimental, the inscrutable, the deeply personal, the visionary.
They create spaces where anyone, regardless of background, can hear a poet at the front of the room, or sit around the table in a workshop, or stand behind a podium to read a story…” “The ability of writers to imagine what is not the self, to familiarize the strange and mystify the familiar, is the test of their power.
