Open source has multiple benefits: It helps ensure that more people around the world can access the opportunities that AI provides and deploys technology more equitably and safely across society. That’s why we continue to advocate for making open access to AI the industry standard. We’re excited to begin accepting applications for the Llama 3.

1 Impact Grants, the next iteration of a larger portfolio of work we’ve invested in over the past year to support organizations as they pursue their ideas for how Llama 3. 1 can be used to address social challenges in their communities.

In less than a year since we launched our first grant program, we’ve seen significant real-world use cases that tap into the power of Llama for good, including in education , entertainment , and the medical field .

In October 2023, we announced the inaugural Llama Impact Grants program—a global call for proposals to source innovative use cases of Llama , our open source AI models, to address critical global challenges in areas like education, the environment, and open innovation. Today, we’re excited to announce that applications are open for the next iteration of this program, the Llama 3.

1 Impact Grants, through which we’ll award a total of up to $2 million USD. We’re seeking proposals that use the new features and capabilities of Llama 3. 1 to explore how these tools can be deployed for economically and socially impactful projects.

We believe AI has more potential than any other modern technology to increase human productivity, creativity, and quality of life—and to accelerate economic growth while unlocking progress in medical and scientific research.

To help realize this potential and help organizations around the world leverage the benefits of open source AI, we’ve expanded our grant program to a portfolio of grants, awards, hackathons, and community building to showcase how open source AI can promote social and economic progress. We’re inspired by the diverse projects we’ve seen developers undertake around the world to positively impact their communities by building with Llama.

Over the past year, we’ve met with and learned from developers and other stakeholders that are already using Llama to address some of the challenges they and their communities face. Building on those efforts, for our next round of Impact Grants, we’ll host a series of in-person and virtual events around the world to explore the new ways Llama 3.

1 can address local community challenges, as well as to provide technical guidance and mentorship to prospective applicants. This will include programs such as virtual events and in-person hackathons, workshops, and trainings in Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Korea, Latin America, North America, Pakistan, Singapore, Sub-Saharan Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

Organizations participating in each of these events will be considered for a specialized award of up to $100,000 USD in addition to being considered for an open call award of up to $500,000 USD. We hope these events will facilitate the development of applications of Llama to the specific economic development and social impact opportunities in local environments.

The Inaugural Llama Impact Grants The first Llama Impact Grants received over 800 applications from 90+ countries, and 20 finalists were selected to advance in the program. Each team has now submitted the final versions of their proposals, and we’ll announce the recipients of those grants in September.

In addition to the finalists, we also identified over 70 runners up from the inaugural Llama Impact Grants, like FoondaMate , with compelling visions for how to incorporate Llama to address specific impact challenges identified within their track. They were invited to our first in-person Global Llama Community Summit, fostering community and potential collaborations that will enable them to build with Llama in the future.

Llama Impact Innovation Awards In July, we launched the Llama Impact Innovation Awards for organizations in Africa, the Middle East, Turkey, Asia Pacific, and Latin America tackling some of the regions’ most pressing challenges using Llama. We’ll award a total of up to $300,000 USD. The recipients of the Llama Impact Innovation Awards will be announced alongside those of the inaugural Llama Impact Grants in September.

In less than a year since we launched our first grant program, we’ve seen significant real-world use cases that tap into the power of Llama for good. At each step along the way, we’ve learned important lessons that have informed the evolution of the program, including the decision to put significant investment into events and capacity building efforts that will take place during the application period.

It’s been an inspiring and exciting journey, and we can’t see what the community builds with Llama 3. 1. Applications are closed after the November 22, 2024 deadline.
