The Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) has allocated $2 million for the launch of the “Mano Amiga” Incentive Plan, a new initiative under the “Crece el Encanto” campaign that will provide financial assistance of up to $10,000 to eligible tourism businesses affected by scheduled water service interruptions.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón and PRTC Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel announced the initiative Monday as part of the government’s response to businesses affected by water disruptions in several regions of Puerto Rico. The program is intended to help eligible tourism businesses maintain operations and offset the impact of water service interruptions.

“Tourism businesses are an essential part of Puerto Rico’s economic development and the well-being of thousands of families who depend on this industry,” González said, adding that the initiative is intended to provide resources to maintain operations and protect jobs.

The funds will be available to tourism businesses that meet the program’s eligibility requirements, regardless of whether they currently have an endorsement from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. Businesses that do not currently have a PRTC endorsement may begin the endorsement process when they submit an application for the Mano Amiga Incentive Plan.

Eligible businesses include agritourism operations, bed-and-breakfasts, eco-lodges, ecotourism businesses, guest houses, hostels, paradores, restaurants and nautical tourism operators, among others. Applicants cannot have previously received funds through the Department of Economic Development and Commerce’s “Economic Recovery” incentive program. Businesses can apply through the program’s online platform, IncentivosCreceElEncanto.

com , where applicants will find the application form and information on the required documentation. Awards of up to $10,000 will be subject to an evaluation of each application and the availability of funds. Applications will be evaluated based on several factors, including whether the business falls within an eligible tourism category and the extent to which its operations have been affected by the lack of water.

Other criteria include the tourism and community impact of the business, the urgency of the assistance to prevent prolonged closures, documentation of operational disruptions and losses or damages, and the company’s recovery and business continuity plan. Applicants may also be required to submit supporting documentation such as photographs, inspection reports, certifications or statements issued by municipal or state authorities.

The final awards will require a favorable recommendation from the program’s Adjudication Committee and the corresponding legal approval. PRTC Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel said the initiative is intended to provide financial support to tourism businesses dealing with the effects of the drought and measures implemented to optimize water use.
