The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through the Sustainable Intensification of Smallholder Farming Systems (SIFAZ) project in Zambia, has launched the Matching Grant Facility (MGF) to support the commercialization of smallholder farmers, cooperatives and agribusinesses across Zambia.
The Matching Grant Facility is an open and competitive funding opportunity available to SIFAZ-supported farmer cooperatives, individual smallholder farmers, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in proven partnerships with SIFAZ cooperatives. The initiative aims to strengthen sustainable intensification practices and improve access to markets and agribusiness services.
The Matching Grant Facility supports enterprises in four key areas: Mechanization Enterprise Development Input Acquisition and Marketing (Agro-dealing) Commodity Aggregation and Marketing Green Enterprise Promotion Funding Windows and Grant Size The facility operates under two funding windows: Window 1: For eligible cooperatives and individual farmers. Window 2: For SMEs working in partnership with SIFAZ-supported cooperatives.
Grant amounts range from €400 to €60,000, depending on the enterprise plan. All grants require a beneficiary contribution: at least 35% for farmers, cooperatives and green entrepreneurs and 50% for SMEs. Funding is provided through either supplier-delivered grants (goods and equipment) or cash grants, with disbursements linked to project milestones and performance.
Eligible applicants must: Be Zambian citizens or registered entities operating in Zambia’s agriculture sector. Be involved in the legume value chain promoted under SIFAZ. Demonstrate ethical business practices and financial accountability.
Commit to working with SIFAZ beneficiaries for the duration of the project. SMEs must also demonstrate at least two years of operation, strong partnerships with cooperatives, and the ability to provide technical support to smallholder farmers.
During each application window, the SIFAZ project will issue a “Call for Matching Grant Facility Application” from interested grant beneficiaries through the Ministry of Agriculture provincial and district offices leading implementation of SIFAZ project activities at field level. Interested applicants in each call can submit only one application, whether the applicant is an individual, SME or cooperative/farmer group.
Only one matching grant agreement between an applicant and FAO can run at a time. Applications can be submitted via FAO Provincial Offices (email or physical submission).
