Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota (BCBSND) Caring Foundation has awarded its 2025 Maternal Health Grants to Catholic Charities North Dakota, the Indigenous Association and the Richland County Health Department. These recipients are actively narrowing the gap in health disparities before, during and after pregnancy and making a tangible difference in the lives of women and their families.

The Caring Foundation launched this grant program after partnering with North Dakota State University (NDSU) Center for Social Research to conduct a maternal health study. “ Health Well-Being in North Dakota Closeup ” highlights positive news happening in the state for maternal health but also revealed many opportunities to improve gaps that mothers and families face.

According to the study, 59% of mothers reported experiencing at least one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE), with 29% reporting three or more. Multiple ACEs are linked to negative health outcomes in adulthood, affecting both mothers and their children. "These grants represent how the power of community-driven solutions can advance maternal well-being.

These three organizations are leading critical efforts to uplift women’s health across North Dakota. Their dedication to creating lasting change for mothers, babies and the entire communities is one to be celebrated," said Amber Blomberg, BCBSND Caring Foundation executive director.

Learn more about the recipients: Catholic Charities North Dakota – Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, Minot locations The nonprofit is enhancing maternal health efforts by providing support services to families two generations at a time through the necessary transportation to appointments, parent education and much more.

Indigenous Association – Fargo based, statewide reach The group has established impactful maternal health initiatives through cohesive, culturally grounded programs including lactation support circles, nutrition workshops, community health education, and weekly Akisni Warrior Talking Circle for recovery support.

Richland County Health Department – Wahpeton area The organization’s work with vulnerable groups, including incarcerated mothers, involves promoting breastfeeding and maternal health during and after incarceration, ensuring continuity of care and providing culturally sensitive education.

This was the first year the Maternal Health Grants were offered in an effort to improve health outcomes for both mothers and infants, setting the foundation for strong families and healthier communities. By investing in maternal health it also reduces long-term healthcare costs and empowers mothers and future generations.

The Indigenous Association provided a free Doula Training in 2024 for individuals who self-identify as Indigenous or work with Indigenous populations.
