Building community across generations through media literacy Building community across generations through media literacy Four EU-funded projects will promote dialogue, skills development and democratic resilience In December 2025, the European Commission launched a call for proposals to support projects that connect different generations around the theme of media literacy in Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Cyprus.
Four projects have been selected to help increase media literacy and build intergenerational trust in rural communities and small towns , bringing together different generations in trusted local spaces such as libraries, cultural centres and community gardens. Funded with €50,000 each over eight months , the four initiatives will promote dialogue, skills development and democratic resilience at a time of rapid social change.
The grant agreements have been signed and the projects are already being implemented. Foundation Together will organise skills exchanges and civic discussions in the local Chitalishte in Parvenets , helping to prepare the ground for a community media platform . CEPEC.
ONG will connect people across the rural communes of Bran, Moieciu, Cheia and Peștera through intergenerational workshops , a community garden and forum theatre . Ionian University will lead participants on the island of Kefalonia in creating a shadow play on media literacy themes, drawing on and contributing to local tradition.
CARDET will produce an intergenerational radio play in Paralimni exploring media literacy themes, with extracts later turned into a QR-accessible sound trail in the local library. By combining creativity, local heritage and cross-generational participation, these projects will help equip rural communities with the skills and trust needed to navigate today’s complex information environment and reinforce democratic resilience.
Applications for this call opened on 12 December 2025 and closed on 6 February 2026 . Selected projects must be delivered in rural areas and small to medium-sized towns with a population of 50,000 or less .
Each project must actively involve at least two of the three primary demographic groups (children and young people under the age of 25, adults (25-64), and older people (65 and above)) in meaningful joint activities on the theme of media literacy in a trusted local space.
Trusted local spaces are settings within a community where community members feel safe and respected and are comfortable meeting, engaging with each other, and discussing different topics. They may be publicly accessible (e.g. library or community centre), or semi-public (e.g. care home, school) provided that the trusted local space can facilitate the building of trust and social connection among its participants.
