MDAP | Empire Discovery Institute Medicines Discovery Award Program MDAP is a competitive incubator and accelerator program designed to identify and advance promising early-stage drug discovery from investigators at the University at Buffalo and the University of Rochester. Award amounts range between $250K to $7. 5M in total program support over five years, reviewed annually.
Successful projects exit as either a negotiated licensing transaction to a strategic partner or as a new startup company launched by Empire Discovery Institute. Following entry, the program is assigned a scientific project team (Project Team) comprised of the principal investigators (PIs), select Advisory Board members, and a project manager.
This Project Team develops a tailored work plan, outlining milestone objectives, budget, and a performance timeline. A portion or the entire work plan may be executed by the PIs under a sponsored research arrangement between Empire Discovery Institute and the partner research institution.
Further, Empire Discovery Institute coordinates and manages the funded research project through its network of contract research organizations, specialty service providers, pharmaceutical industry experts, and consultants. Work performed in the PI’s laboratory receives financial payments linked to specific work plan-driven milestones.
Advancement to the next level of support is determined on an annual basis by Empire Discovery Institute's Advisory Board.
ACCEPTED PROJECTS RECIEVE: CLINICAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FILING, REGULATORY STRATEGY, AND IND PREPARATION CLINICAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FILING, REGULATORY STRATEGY, AND IND PREPARATION DRUG DISCOVERY & DEVELOPMENT EXPERTISE Drug discovery and development expertise Company incorporation and management Clinical development strategy, intellectual property filing, regulatory strategy, and IND preparation Eligible Project Resources Novel insights into disease pathways or molecular mechanisms of human disease that have a clear mechanism of action or possess a well-defined genetic basis.
Research in the fields of cancer, neurological CNS conditions, autoimmune, rare and orphan diseases, and platform technologies with broad therapeutic potential. Projects with a strong biomarker component to support translational development. Applications accepted on a rolling basis, unless otherwise requested by Empire Discovery Institute under a formal Request for Proposal (RFP).
After an initial proposal review, selected investigators are invited to give a 30-minute presentation to the Empire Discovery Institute, followed by a 30-minute Q&A. The presentation and the proposal are evaluated against Empire Discovery Institute's "market-back, science-forward" framework. Proposals receiving high scores are recommended to the Empire Discovery Institute’s board for approval and entry into MDAP.
Unsuccessful applications receive constructive feedback and are encouraged to reapply in the future. Investigators must have a faculty position at the University at Buffalo or the University of Rochester.
