Milton Safenowitz Postdoctoral Fellowship for ALS Research is sponsored by ALS Association. This fellowship supports postdoctoral research specifically focused on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a neurological disease with significant genetic components.

Milton Safenowitz Postdoctoral Fellowship Program | Research Funding Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association Milton Safenowitz Postdoctoral Fellowship Program The ALS Association believes that attracting bright, young scientists to enter and remain in ALS research is essential for making ALS a livable disease and curing it.

Through the generosity of the Safenowitz family, The Hugh and Herbert Hoffman ALS Impact Fund, and other philanthropic members of the ALS community, the Milton Safenowitz Postdoctoral Fellowship Program provides early-career scientists with up to $150,000 over 2 years to support research of high scientific merit and relevance to ALS.

Safenowitz Fellows work with a senior mentor and receive extensive exposure to the ALS research community through meetings, presentations, and the Association’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Consortium. The Consortium brings together Association-funded fellows to collaborate, present their research, gain feedback, and deepen their knowledge and experience in the ALS field.

Safenowitz Fellows also develop high-quality papers and collect foundational data to support applications for future funding from the Association, the National Institutes of Health, and other sources. After completing this fellowship, more than 75% of awardees stay in ALS research. Many go on to establish their own laboratories and mentor more ALS researchers along the way.

Other Safenowitz Fellows have moved on to successful careers in industry, medical writing, and non-profit organizations. Letter of Intent Deadline: February 10, 2026, 1 p. m.

US ET Full Proposal Deadline (by invitation only) : April 21, 2026, 1 p. m. US ET We are especially interested in supporting fellowships focused on: • New target validation in animal models and human cell models.

• Target or pathway biology in disease-relevant models, including defining upstream and/or downstream modifiers and convergence of promising target pathways. • Factors that could ultimately reduce the risk of developing ALS, including studies of genetic risk factors, epigenetics, gene-environment interactions, epidemiology, and lifestyle, occupational, or dietary factors.

• New biomarker identification and the development and/or validation of biomarker assays. • Managing ALS, including the development and/or validation of novel assistive technologies and the measurement of patient, caregiver, or family burden.

• Analysis of -omics data from resources including, but not limited to, PRO-ACT, Project MinE, or Answer ALS, to identify disease-relevant patient subtypes, new therapeutic targets, or new biomarkers. • Individuals who received their terminal research degree (i.e., Ph. D.)

or completed their postgraduate clinical training on or after February 10, 2024, are eligible to apply. • Applicants must have the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research and have an existing postdoctoral position, including the support of their mentor. • Fellows cannot hold another postdoctoral fellowship at any point during the 2-year period of the award.

Any other fellowships will need to be declined or relinquished to be eligible to receive funding through the Safenowitz Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. Award: $150,000 in total funding over 2 years to support the development of junior postdoctoral researchers who received their Ph. D.
