Sloan's Human-AI Interaction programme sits inside the foundation's Digital Technology division and funds a specific and often underserved slice of AI research: multidisciplinary work on how humans interact with, are affected by, and can benefit from AI systems, plus prototyping that moves those insights into practice. The inclusion of prototyping is the distinguishing feature. Most foundation AI research funding stops at publication; Sloan explicitly supports building novel uses of AI systems, which makes this a viable home for researchers whose contribution is a working artefact rather than a paper. Grants typically run USD 100,000 to USD 400,000, a scale suited to a focused two-to-three-year project with a small team rather than a centre or institute. The application process is low-friction by design and rewards early contact: a letter of inquiry of no more than two pages emailed to technology@sloan.org, accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed quarterly, with grants above USD 250,000 approved on a quarterly board cycle. Applicants should plan around that cadence, since a letter arriving just after a review point waits a full quarter. Eligibility covers universities, research institutions and nonprofits. Because the programme is discipline-agnostic within its frame, proposals combining computer science with cognitive science, sociology, law, design or human-computer interaction fit naturally, and purely technical machine learning proposals with no human-facing dimension do not. The current cycle carries a deadline of 31 December 2026.

The Mind, Machine, and Motor Nexus (M3X) program supports fundamental research that enables intelligent engineered systems and humans to engage in bidirectional interaction in a physics-based environment, to enhance and ensure safety, productivity, and well-being. Proposals must propose significant contributions to at least one of the following areas: Conceptual frameworks and theoretical modeling; Dynamic interaction analysis and simulation; and Innovative technologies for enhanced interaction.
