Discover Indigenous Pathways with Mitacs Like companies everywhere, Indigenous-owned businesses and organizations need to innovate in order to grow and achieve their strategic goals. But the tools you need to do that require talent, time, and budget .

Through our Indigenous Pathways initiative , we help you find top talent and co-invest in collaborative R&D projects . Projects are a minimum of four months in duration – they can be longer – and now your contribution is only 25% of the cost of projects that have an intern who is Indigenous.

Effective December 15, 2025, the Internship Unit (IU) cap for the Indigenous Pathways initiative will increase from 12 to 30 IUs per submission year for each Indigenous partner organization. This gives partners more flexibility when accessing talent to meet their research and development project needs. Please contact your Mitacs Advisor with questions or concerns.

Your project is co-funded; we fund up to 75% of the cost Your R&D project can be scalable and multidisciplinary You are matched with the right talent and expertise You gain access to our extensive global networks We fund up to 75% of your project — a minimum of four months in duration. If your project is bigger and requires more than four months, your investment remains at 25% of the cost.

In order to participate, one of the following requirements must be met: The partner organization must be a for-profit organization with self-identifying Indigenous persons (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) who hold 50% or greater ownership shares The partner organization must be a not-for-profit organization with board membership consisting of 50% or greater self-identifying Indigenous Persons (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) The partner organization must be an Indigenous Government or Indigenous Government owned entity (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit).

The student assigned to the project must be a self-identifying Indigenous person (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) Read our Indigenous Research Policy Mitacs is committed to supporting research projects that have the potential to respond directly to the needs and priorities of Indigenous communities by making meaningful contributions in several key areas (e.g. reconciliation, public health, environmental sustainability, etc.).

Indigenous Peoples are colleagues and rights holders in such projects, and Mitacs encourages both Indigenous-led research and Indigenous and non-Indigenous collaboration on innovative proposals concerning these subjects. What does Indigenous innovation look like? Mitacs is committed to supporting Indigenous communities and improving access to our programs.

Founded by local Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg entrepreneur Sunshine Tenasco, the Pow Wow Pitch provides free resources, live training, and mentorship opportunities through the Indigenous Startup Program.
