Partnerships to Transform Emerging Industries RNA Tools/Biotechnology Supports collaborative high-risk, high-reward projects to develop cutting-edge tools and methods that advance RNA biological research and biotechnology for applications across various sectors, including agriculture, energy and global health.
This initiative supports fundamentally new approaches in molecular sciences to drive new directions in biotechnology, a critical and emerging technology of the 21st century. This is the fourth year of a campaign targeting broad themes to be pursued through collaborative high risk/high reward projects.
This MFB solicitation calls for creative, cross-disciplinary research and technology development proposals to accelerate understanding of RNA function in complex biological systems and to harness RNA research to advance biotechnology. Award sizes must not exceed $1,500,000 in total costs (direct and indirect) for the entire project and a duration of up to 3 years.
The project budget and duration must be commensurate with the scale and scope of the research. For questions about NHGRI interests, contact: Ian C. Nova, telephone: (240) 281-2885, email: ian.

New NIH awards have fallen 34% in 2026, NSF is running months behind, and a proposed OMB rule would let political appointees terminate grants mid-stream. The funding environment for academic research has structurally changed. Here is a clear-eyed diversification strategy for PIs, research offices, and institutions that cannot wait for the political fight to resolve.
Read articleOMB's proposed rewrite of 2 CFR Part 200 would bar political appointees from deferring to peer reviewers and require senior-appointee sign-off on every discretionary grant. NIH new awards are already down about 34% in 2026. Here is what the merit-review changes actually say, how 'Gold Standard Science' becomes a scoring lever, why R1 universities are being written out of some solicitations, and what principal investigators and research offices should do before October 1.
Read articleOPM's March 2026 rule strips civil service protections from positions deemed policy-influencing — including potentially thousands of grant reviewers and program officers across NSF, NIH, and the Department of Defense. Here's how grant seekers should adapt.
