Multifamily Recycling Grant | NC DEQ Open and Accepting Proposals The purpose of the Multifamily Recycling Grant program is to initiate or expand sustainable programs to recycle traditional household materials (paper, cardboard, metal cans, glass and plastic bottles and containers) from multifamily residences.
Generally, a multifamily property is defined as a housing structure that includes five or more dwelling units although local definitions and service provisions may vary. Examples of multifamily properties may include but are not limited to: apartment buildings, condominiums, retirement communities, and off-campus student housing.
Grant funding is available to local governments, recycling businesses or non-profits, multifamily property owners or management companies, public housing authorities, and colleges and universities for off-campus housing. Grant funds may be used to purchase typical equipment needs to start or expand multifamily recycling such as carts, dumpsters, collection vehicles, concrete pads, recycling corrals and education.
Grant funds may also be used to fund temporary positions or labor to manage or implement multifamily programs. DEACS is encouraging the expansion of recycling services to multifamily properties to provide equitable access, meet resident demand, and redirect more recyclable material back into the circular economy. Emerging Contaminants Funding is a grant from North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Water Infrastructure that funds planning and construction projects addressing Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in water and wastewater systems. Funded through federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law dollars administered via State Revolving Funds, the program offers 100% principal forgiveness to eligible applicants. Projects are scored using an established Priority Rating System. Eligible applicants include local government units (counties, cities, towns, sanitary districts), non-profit water and wastewater corporations, investor-owned drinking water utilities, and publicly-owned landfills in North Carolina. The next application deadline is June 1, 2026, with rolling deadlines throughout the year.
North Carolina Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) Program is sponsored by North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Coastal Management (DCM) through U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The BIG Program offers competitive grant funding to construct, renovate, and maintain boating infrastructure that serves transient recreational vessels 26 feet or longer. Eligible projects include transient docks, piers, mooring buoys, and pump-out facilities.
On June 11, 2026, U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel ruled that the EPA's February 2025 termination of the $2.8 billion Environmental and Climate Justice Block Grant Program — created by Section 60201 of the Inflation Reduction Act — was arbitrary, capricious, and unlawful. The ruling voids the termination but does not order the EPA to resume the program, leaving the September 30, 2026 statutory deadline as the binding constraint. For the 116 grantees and the coalition of nonprofits, cities, and tribal partners that were already in award negotiations, the next 105 days will determine whether the program survives in any operational form or migrates entirely to the Court of Federal Claims as a damages action.
