The program promotes the mission of Indiana Audubon and funds scholarships for natural resource studies. It is funded annually through Indiana Audubon’s Silent Auction event during the Dunes Birding Festival and annual restricted member donations. Application window: June 1 to August 15 Awards announced: By October 1 We offer three ways to apply, depending on what you’re working on.

For organizations, researchers, and community groups These grants support on-the-ground work that benefits birds and habitat. Examples of eligible projects: Habitat restoration or management Bird monitoring, banding, or research Community science initiatives Education and outreach programs Conservation planning or implementation Funding range: Typically $500 to $2,500, up to $5,000 for strong proposals 2.

Individual Scholarships For students, early-career professionals, or those with a demonstrated need. These awards help people build skills, gain experience, and grow in conservation.

Examples of eligible uses: Field courses and training programs Conferences and workshops Certifications or specialized instruction Summer programs or camps focused on birds or natural resources Funding range: Up to $1,000 per year, renewable for up to four years 3. Community & Place-Based Support For local governments, Bird Towns, and community-led efforts. This funding supports projects that improve public spaces for birds and people.

Examples of eligible projects: Bird-friendly park improvements Habitat enhancements in public spaces Community engagement and education initiatives Local conservation partnerships We focus funding where it can have the most impact.

Priority is given to: Projects that directly benefit Indiana bird populations Work focused on high-priority species identified through eBird data Efforts tied to the Great Lakes region and migratory bird pathways Projects with clear, measurable outcomes Proposals that leverage partnerships or matching support We also support select projects outside Indiana when they connect to shared migratory species or regions where our community works.

Though match is not required, projects that demonstrate a match will be prioritized in funding. Additional funding from the Mumford & Keller Program supports domestic and international projects in the regions we visit.
