Student Opportunities › Julia Warden ’24 traveled to Montenegro to study its religious, cultural, sports, and historical evolution through several periods. The Nanovic Institute’s suite of undergraduate grants engages students in transformative learning beyond the classroom. Research, internship, and language study grants connect students to the cultures and ideas that have and continue to shape Europe today.
All students, regardless of their field of study, are encouraged to consider applying for Nanovic funding. While the Nanovic Institute accepts proposals from students with wide-ranging interests in European Studies, the Institute prioritizes the funding of applications that directly engage the institute's research priorities .
The institute offers a number of resources on grant proposal writing and research including one-on-one advising and a one-credit research methods and project design course. Questions? Contact Roy Kimmey , program manager of student research and academic affairs, or schedule a meeting .
Research grants support independent undergraduate research projects in Europe. Students work with a faculty advisor to develop a research question, methodology, and project design. Research projects can be exploratory in nature, but should always contribute to a students’ academic or professional goals.
Grants are awarded for research taking place over winter and summer breaks. Winter Break (Sophomores, Juniors, & Seniors): Wednesday, October 29, 2025 Summer Break (First Years, Sophomores, & Juniors): Wednesday, March 18, 2026 Internship & Service Grants The internship and service grant provides funding to students who have secured internships or service projects in Europe.
The project should be connected to European studies, rather than just taking place in Europe. Grant funding covers flights, lodging, and modest living expenses over the course of the internship or service project. This grant is only offered over summer break.
