The National Science Foundation and USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture have issued a joint Dear Colleague Letter seeking proposals to advance foundational research in agricultural robotics through the NSF Foundational Research in Robotics FRR program. Proposals must present a compelling vision for pioneering robots with transformative potential in agricultural contexts and be clearly justified by important needs in agriculture and the agricultural sciences. The initiative combines NSF expertise in robotics and computer science with NIFA expertise in agricultural research to support development of innovative AI-driven robots for farming harvesting crop monitoring livestock management precision agriculture and other agricultural applications. Proposals must have titles prefixed with NIFA: and be submitted to the FRR program. NSF manages the review process with USDA staff participating as observers. If NIFA selects a proposal for funding the institution must withdraw from NSF and submit to NIFA instead. This is distinct from USDA NIFA AFRI AI-Enabled Agricultural Science grants which focus broadly on agricultural AI research and from the standard NSF FRR program which covers all robotics domains.

Read articleUSDA-NIFA-HEP-011737 puts $14 million behind roughly 28 awards of up to $705,000 for graduate fellowships in food and agricultural sciences. No match is required. But two eligibility rules — the new-graduate-student definition and the citizenship requirement — disqualify most of the students a department would naturally nominate.
