National Estuarine Research Reserve System Science Collaborative Projects This competitive grant program is the mechanism by which most of the NOAA-funded research undertaken at the nation’s research reserves is accomplished. An average of $3 million is awarded each year. All projects contribute to the national effort to make the coast more resilient to natural and man-made changes.
A unique aspect is community involvement, where state agency professionals and local people who need the science help design and carry out each project. An added benefit is obtained through the interconnectivity of the reserve system, since project results from one reserve are more easily transferred and benefit all. The research reserve's Science Collaborative is jointly administered by NOAA and the University of Michigan .
The Science Collaborative administers annual requests for proposals to identify, fund, and foster science-based projects that address coastal management problems that reserves identify as priorities. To date, the program has funded collaborative projects addressing Climate change impacts on estuaries and coastal communities. Mitigation of the impacts of land use change, estuarine eutrophication, and contamination.
Restoration of estuarine habitat. The use of System-wide Monitoring Program and sentinel site data. Please contact your local reserve to find out which topics are current priorities.
