International Engagement | National Endowment for the Humanities NEH’s international engagement with foreign governments, multilateral organizations, and other international partners fosters global understanding and collaboration in the humanities.

By supporting cultural exchange and scholarly research, NEH helps to preserve and share the diverse heritage in the humanities, connecting American scholars, practitioners, and institutions with their counterparts around the world.

Through partnerships and initiatives, NEH promotes cross-cultural dialogue, facilitates international research collaborations, and enhances the global impact of humanities scholarship, ensuring that the humanities remain a vital force in addressing shared global challenges.

Explore Opportunities Here Our International Collaborations The U.S. National Science Foundation is an independent federal agency that supports science and engineering in all 50 states and U.S. territories.

The collaboration between NSF and NEH is based in promoting multilateral international collaboration focused on support for research activities and cross-curricular education among science, engineering, and the humanities, such as the Global Centers Program that supports large-scale collaborative research to address global challenges.

The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC) is an independent U.S. federal agency with the mission of sustaining the U.S.-Japan relationship. The Fellowships for Advanced Social Science Research on Japan program is a joint activity of JUSFC and the NEH to promote Japan studies in the United States, to encourage U.S.-Japanese scholarly exchange, and to foster the next generation of Japan scholars in the United States.

Fellowships for Advanced Social Science Research >> The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is a federal research funding agency in Canada promoting research and research training in the humanities and social sciences. The partnership between NEH and SSHRC will allow for collaborative projects between U.S. and Canadian scholars focused on the promotion of Indigenous research across a number of different fields.

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funds world-class, independent research in subjects from philosophy and the creative industries to art conservation and product design. NEH and AHRC are collaborating to bring together humanities scholars from the U.S. and UK to foster the interchange of information and scholarly research in the humanities.

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is the central self-governing research funding organization in Germany serving the sciences and humanities. Together, the DFG and NEH are co-funding U.S.-German collaborative research projects, promoting the collaboration between U.S. and German scholars in a number of fields.

The Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) is an institution through which a profound reforming effort is being undertaken in the field of research and innovation in Greece. The partnership between NEH and HFRI provides funding for U.S. and Greek scholars to collaborate on opportunities including joint research projects, and participation in scholarly conferences, workshops, and seminars.

The U.S.-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) promotes scientific relations between the U.S. and Israel by supporting collaborative research projects in a wide area of basic and applied scientific fields, for peaceful and non-profit purposes.

This NEH-BSF collaborative research opportunity encourages more international collaboration in humanities research between American and Israeli scholars and helps reduce some of the current barriers to working internationally. The Trans-Atlantic Platform for Social Sciences and Humanities (T-AP) is an unprecedented collaboration between humanities and social science research funders from South America, North America, Europe and Africa.

Together with ten international members of T-AP, the NEH and National Science Foundation recently represented the United States in a collaborative grant program on the topic “Democracy, Governance, and Trust” (DGT).
