Neurologic Physical Therapy Research Grant Fund is sponsored by Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy (ANPT) / Foundation for Physical Therapy Research. This grant initiative focuses on supporting research within neurologic physical therapy to fill evidence gaps, address real-world challenges, and elevate the practice of neurologic physical therapy.

Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy Endowment Fund for Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I & II Scholarships ANPT financially supports post-professional doctoral training and, at the same time, honors two extraordinary ANPT members, Mary Lou Barnes and Patricia Leahy.

The Mary Lou Barnes scholarship was originated in 1993 after Dr. Barnes suggested during her Mary McMillan lecture that doctoral training needed to be supported by members. The Patricia Leahy award was begun in 1995 to further support doctoral education. Beginning 2001, ANPT partnered with the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research to administer these scholarships within their Promotion of Doctoral Studies program.

The Mary Lou Barnes Award provides $15,000 to a highly qualified academic doctoral candidate and the Patricia Leahy Award provides $7,500 to a highly qualified academic doctoral student. In addition, at the Combined Sections Meeting in February 2006, the Section voted to make annual donations to the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research to fully endow these scholarships.

Starting with the vision of Mary Lou Barnes in 1992, our Section has steadily built and sustained the support required to ensure that these scholarships will continue in perpetuity.

FPTR Neurology Endowment Fund 2025 Report ANPT Pledged New Endowment for Neurologic Physical Therapy Research Grants The Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy – an Academy of the American Physical Therapy Association- recently pledged a major gift of $110,000 to the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research to fund neurology-centric physical therapy research grants.

“Since our founding, the Academy has held research as an essential tenet within its mission. For more than two decades, our partnership with the Foundation has been focused on supporting the next generations of researchers through the doctoral scholarship endowment. We are very excited to expand this partnership to include support of neurologic physical therapy research grants,” shares Academy President Nancy Fell, PT, PhD, FAPTA.

“Focused neurologic research funding is essential for accelerating the growth of our knowledge-base and elevating practice. ” This pledge builds on a previous commitment from the Academy to support scholarships through its endowment fund established with the Foundation in 2002. This new fund, the Neurologic Physical Therapy Research Grant Fund, will provide support specifically for research grants.

A generous bequest of $140,000 from Isabelle Bohman will supplement this fund. Isabelle directed her bequest to support research grants related to neurologic physical therapy as she focused mostly on the management of individuals with stroke or head injuries in hospital settings throughout her career. The Foundation has awarded over $24.

4 million in grants, scholarships, and fellowships in its 45-year history, thanks to generous donations capably administered through its effective grants management system.

Foundation-funded researchers have received over $930 million in follow-on funding, demonstrating the success of the Foundation’s approach to provide small grants that build research experience and capacity that, in turn, helps prepare researchers win larger grants from other funding organizations. The Foundation has much to offer as a funding partner for academies and sections.
