New Mental Health Scale-Up Fund

New Mental Health Scale-Up Fund is sponsored by Community Foundation for Surrey. A fund dedicated to scaling up mental health initiatives, aiming to improve mental health services and support within the community.

Surrey Mental Health Scale-Up Fund — Community Foundation for Surrey Mental Health Scale-Up Fund This is a collective fund supported by public and private donors. Launched in 2021 the fund was set up to produce a step change improvement in the support available in Surrey for young people’s mental health, ensuring help is available wherever they live.

The 11 projects currently receiving funding all demonstrate clear, measurable impact and the ability to scale up delivery to reach more beneficiaries, an additional cohort and/or a wider geographic area. The Mental Health Scale Up Fund is supported by the Sedel Collings Foundation, the Netherby Trust, the Quies Trust, the A&J Smith Fund, Surrey County Council and NHS Surrey Heartlands in addition to individual private donations.

Donations to the Mental Health Scale-Up Fund can be made here: Funding for the most recent round (Round 6) was provided exclusively by Surrey County Council and Surrey Heartlands through their Mental Health Innovation Fund, supporting projects and activities that benefit people of all ages. With Round 6 now complete, the Fund is currently paused to allow time for review, reflection, and shared learning.

View the MHSU Impact Report We have awarded grants from the Fund across five rounds. Each five-year grant will support the development and expansion of vital support for young people.

Details of the grants awarded to date are below: Oakleaf, Hope Hub, Guildford Action & Rentstart - Suicide Prevention in Young Adults Funding to enable the groups to provide additional specialist suicide prevention work for young adults which includes delivery of activities for young adults with a strong emphasis on building resilience, increasing social interaction, access to volunteering and employment and breaking the cycle of service dependency as well as meeting basic needs such as access to food, clothing, safe accommodation and treatment services.

Additional support will be provided through support for families and carers. Surrey Care Trust - Nurture Through Nature Funding to expand a Mental Health intervention - Nurture through Nature - over five years. This funding will support provision of nature-based activities, but crucially will allow SCT to properly structure their work into a programme of activities available in a wider geography to many more young people.

- Primary School Mental Health Funding towards the scale-up costs of a project delivering early intervention support in primary schools to help children 10 years of age and under build resilience & learn strategies to manage key areas & relationships in their lives. Home Start Surrey - Dad Matters Funding to grow and deliver the Dad Matters programme across the whole of Surrey over the next 5 years.

The programme focuses on supporting fathers’ mental health at a perinatal stage, building resilience to ensure they can optimally support both mother and infant and minimise the impact of traumatic circumstances surrounding the perinatal period, including maternal mental illness. Funding will support vital creative interventions for vulnerable young people as they transition from Year 6 to year 7.

For children who struggle with emotional regulation, the transition from primary to secondary school can be particularly challenging. This funding will enable Peer Productions to work with more schools across Surrey, reaching thousands of young people at a pivotal moment in their lives. Project to support Mental Health and wellbeing of young adults aged 18-30 who are transitioning from Children’s to adult’s services.

Project will provide counselling and group work across 11 boroughs including all 21 key neighbourhoods in Surrey. Delight - Rainforest Retreat Programme Project to improve mental health and wellbeing in children experiencing multiple disadvantages aged 7-10 and facing transition from primary to secondary school. Project will be rolled out in schools across Surrey focussing on those in key neighbourhoods.

Be Me - Be Me Schools Project Funding to expand delivery of courses to young people aged 11-15 years in schools addressing mental health challenges. The work involves activity and discussion-based courses designed to raise self-esteem & confidence, build resilience and lower anxiety.

Surrey Minority Ethnic Forum - Baby Steps Perinatal Equity Project SMEF in collaboration with Best Start have been funded to expand and continue the Baby Steps Perinatal Equity Project to provide mental health, emotional wellbeing, social connection and psycho-social support to women, families and children from ethnic minorities during the perinatal period.

Surrey Domestic Abuse Partnership - Suicide Prevention Services Funding to sustainably scale-up their Suicide Prevention Services for young people up to age 30. This funding will provide additional specialist one to one safety planning case work, and a therapeutic support package for young people aged 16 – 30 who are experiencing any form of domestic abuse across Surrey.

Oakleaf Enterprise, Catalyst Support and The Hope Hub This funding will enable the groups to scale up the current outreach support provided, by focusing on individuals showing emerging signs of multiple disadvantage (specified as experiencing any two or more of the five disadvantages), aiming for prevention through early intervention.

The consortium will target priority populations within all 21 key neighbourhoods in Surrey, working with beneficiaries directly in their communities. The aim is to build resilience through early intervention, working 1-1 with beneficiaries within a defined timeframe of up to 24 weeks..
