Newcomer's Fund

Newcomer's Fund is sponsored by Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga. The Newcomer's Fund is a resource led by Community Foundation staff and community volunteers with a demonstrated passion for improving the lives of immigrants and refugees in the Chattanooga region.

This fund supports the Accelerator Loan Fund (ALF), expanding access to affordable capital for promising small businesses in Chattanooga and Hamilton County, helping entrepreneurs grow when traditional financing isn’t available. By removing barriers and pairing capital with guidance, the fund fuels opportunity, strengthens local businesses, and builds a more resilient regional economy.

As these loans are repaid, the capital can be redeployed to support new entrepreneurs. The Fund for Chattanooga is the living legacy of generous Chattanoogans who knew that our city would grow and evolve in ways they could never have imagined. Through planned and current gifts, they helped create a permanent fund.

It is through this endowed fund that we make community-led grants and support the essential work in this community to both care for our most vulnerable and invest in the kinds of systemic changes that will result in greater opportunity for all of our neighbors.

## Together We Can Scholarship Fund Our largest need-based scholarship fund, Together We Can, has given more than 1,000 local students the opportunity not only to attend but also graduate college — students who otherwise would not have the means to do so. Together We Can changes lives by partnering with universities to support students from orientation to graduation, and connecting them with post-college opportunities.

We build long-term relationships with our students, growing their confidence and ambition, helping them see that they can achieve a better future.

## Management Support Fund The Management Support Fund directly supports the operations and efforts of the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, ensuring the Foundation has the expertise, experience, and critical resources necessary to transform generosity into impact to realize a more just and prosperous city for all of our neighbors.

## Community Leadership Fund The Leadership Fund was established in 2017 by the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga to expand its capacity to steward the community’s philanthropic legacy, address the root causes of intergenerational poverty, and create pathways for economic mobility.

Gifts to this fund support the work of the Foundation in convening and leading efforts to address the root causes of the some of the most difficult issues facing our community. ## African American Cemetery Preservation Fund The African American Cemetery Preservation Fund was established to maintain Chattanooga’s historic African American cemeteries including Beck Knob, Pleasant Garden and Shepherd Cemetery.

## Ann Aiken-Jim Hudson Haiti Endowment Fund Believing that education is the surest path out of poverty, this fund was created to honor Ann Aiken and Jim Hudson, and a legion of volunteers, for their tireless and selfless devotion building and supporting the Saint John the Evangelist School, an Episcopal school in Petit Harpon, Haiti.

To further the process of land conservation, preservation, and protection ## Brainerd High School Alumni Association Fund The Brainerd High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 to provide one time college scholarship to deserving graduating Brainerd High School seniors.

## Bridge Scholars of Chattanooga Scholarship Fund The Bridge Scholars of Chattanooga Scholarship Fund provides four-year, renewable scholarships to qualifying graduation seniors of the Bridge Scholars of Chattanooga Program.

## Carrie Smith Lawson Scholarship Fund One –time scholarship to deserving graduating seniors at Walker Valley High School who has been accepted to an accredited two or four year college or university and plan to attend college the Fall semester following high school graduation.

## Central High School Gordon Smith Scholarship Fund This scholarship was created in honor of Gordon Smith, Central High School’s basketball coach from 1954-1973. He was well liked and known for his big heart and dedication to his players. Preference given to basketball players.

## Central High School - Principal's Scholarship Fund Nominations are made by the Principal. Preference given to students planning to attend UTC. ## Central High School - Ray Moss Scholarship Fund This scholarship was created in honor of Ray Moss.

Ray Moss was an All-American football and baseball player at CHS. and at UTK where he lettered. He is also the founder of Golden Gallon.

Preference given to students planning to attend UTK. ## Central High School Robert Kirk Walker Scholarship Fund This scholarship was created in honor of Kirk Walker. Kirk Walker graduated in 1944 and was voted “Mr. Central.

” He is a former Mayor of Chattanooga. Preference given to applicants interested in majoring in Pre-law or Political science. ## Central High School - Warren Mackey, Jr. Scholarship Fund This scholarship is in memory of Warren Mackey Jr., the son of County Commissioner Warren Mackey, Sr. While at Central, Warren Jr. was a member of the Varsity basketball team.

This is a renewable scholarship. Preference is given to students with financial need and attending Chattanooga State. ## Chattanooga Area Food Bank Endowment Fund The Chattanooga Area Food Bank’s mission is to lead a network of partners and unite the community to eliminate hunger by feeding, nourishing and empowering those we serve..

Working with a hunger relief network of nearly 250 partner organizations, churches, government entities, and schools, the Food Bank builds pathways for a healthy, hunger-free future. A contribution to our endowment sustains and ensures the future impact of our work.

## Chattanooga Engineers Scholarship Fund The Chattanooga Engineers Club Scholarship was partially bequeathed from the estate of Earl Lee & Almeda Frazier of Soddy Daisy, TN to use in support of students majoring in engineering. Mrs. Frazier was a past president and faithful participant of the Chattanooga Engineers Club.

## Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy Endowment Fund The CGLA Endowment Fund was established to support the activities of the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy.

## Chattanooga Promise Packs The Chattanooga Promise Pack Fund was established to support educational success for children in subsidized housing communities through the provision of food, programs, services, and coordination of existing community resources for children and their families.

## Chattanooga Public Library Foundation Endowment Fund The Chattanooga Public Library Foundation Endowment Fund is setup to support the long term efforts of the Chattanooga Public Library. ## Children's Advocacy Center Endowment The Children’s Advocacy Center Endowment was established to support the activities of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Hamilton County.

## Connie O'Neal Scholarship Fund The Chattanooga Housing Authority (CHA) established a scholarship in honor of Consuelo “Connie” Bray O’Neal, who served on the CHA Board of Commissioners for eight years prior to her death in 2012. This is a one-time scholarship designed to support graduating seniors from Hamilton County.

The CREI Fund was established to provide resource support, training, and technical assistance to promote and foster community engagement and Innovation. ## CSAS Alumni Scholarship Fund The CSAS Alumni Fund was established to provide a one-time merit based college scholarships to graduating seniors at CSAS. Preference is given to students who have not received many or any private scholarships.

## Dalewood Middle School Endowment Fund Dalewood is to be a model middle school that provides a positive, safe environment that fosters academic excellence and model citizenship for all students.

The mission of Dalewood Middle School is to provide and maintain a comfortable, caring, and orderly environment that ensures all students are prepared for the rigors of high school and other post-secondary options through academic preparedness, emotional stability, proper social connectivity, and physical wellness.

## Ed Johnson Memorial Project The primary purposes of the Ed Johnson Project are: (1) Remembrance, (2) Reconciliation, and (3) Healing. We recognize that there can be no reconciliation and healing without remembering the past.

With this in mind, the Project intends to erect the Ed Johnson Memorial; to foster public education and outreach that includes an educational curriculum; and to forge relationships and collaborative opportunities to raise awareness of racial injustice.

## Ed Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 2006 with proceeds from "Dead Innocent-The Ed Johnson Story" a play written by LaFrederick Thirkill to honor the memory of 24 year old Ed Johnson. This scholarship is awarded to students who are in their Sophomore year or later majoring in the area of criminal justice.

The applicant is required to submit an essay regarding the story of Ed Johnson so they may be educated on this history. ## Educate 2 Elevate Fund The Educate 2 Elevate Fund provides educational opportunities and social welfare for underrepresented minority students living and attending public schools in Hamilton County, especially District 5.

## Elizabeth Ann Weathers Breast Cancer Research Fund The Elizabeth Ann Weathers Breast Cancer Research Fund has been established with the mission of helping others find a cure for Breast Cancer. The Fund supports accredited scientific teams, on a project-by-project basis, for the sole purpose of finding a cure for Breast Cancer. By supporting this permanent fund, you help ensure that local families will always have access to safe, affordable housing and the strength that comes with a place to call home. ## Hixson High School Centennial Alumni Scholarship Fund Hixson High School Centennial Scholarship was established by the Alumni Association in 2009 to support graduating seniors from Hixson who have the desire to attend college.

The student must have at least a 2. 75 cumulative GPA and demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). ## Houston Museum Legacy Fund The Houston Museum Legacy Fund provides general support for The Houston Museum of Decorative Arts, Inc. in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

## Jerry Marshall Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund The Jerry Marshall Sr. Memorial Scholarship was established in 2013 to provide college financial assistance to those not only in need, but to those most deserving.

The fund was created in memory of Jerry Marshall Sr. He was a loyal, dedicated and caring individual employed by the City of Chattanooga’s Parks and Recreation Department (now known as Youth and Family Development) for more than 25 years. His heart, spirit and gentleness touched the lives of many people in our community, both young and old, throughout his life. His work has spoken for him and this scholarship will carry on his legacy.

Jackson, II Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund The Joe Jackson Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund is designed to support the work of the Joe Jackson Memorial Scholarship Fund.

## Joe W. Jackson II Memorial Scholarship Fund The Joe Jackson, II Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 in loving memory of an energetic, talented and caring young man. Joey was a graduate of The Baylor School of Chattanooga and a 2004 graduate of The University of Alabama.

He was a quiet leader with the innate ability to connect with people in a meaningful manner. It was important to him to reach out to those who needed help, especially those who were unable to do for themselves. He was an avid reader and enjoyed being an active member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the Masonic Lodge 490.

This scholarship is open to eligible graduating high school senior in Hamilton County, TN. ## John P. Franklin, Sr. Scholarship Fund The John P.

Franklin, Sr. Achievement Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 to honor his extraordinary life and achievements. Mr. John P. Franklin, Sr., was the first African-American elected official in Hamilton County and has been a true leader in the Chattanooga community for over 60 years.

His legacy is that he has touched and molded the lives of many as an educator, entrepreneur, philanthropist, elected government official, civic and community leader, devoted family man and Christian. He is a Life-Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and was initiated in 1947 at Fisk University. This scholarship is open to eligible graduating high school senior males in Hamilton County, TN.

## Judy Copeland Memorial Scholarship Fund The Judy Minge Copeland Memorial Scholarship for the Arts was established in loving memory of an outstanding educator, artist and community volunteer. Judy was known for her caring and cheerful personality as well her commitment to education, the Arts, community involvement, and enthusiasm for helping others.

This scholarship is open to eligible graduating high school seniors from Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences. ## McKamey Animal Center Fund McKamey Animal Center (MAC) was founded in 2008 to serve the pets and people of Chattanooga, Tennessee and surrounding areas. We are an open-admission shelter with local government contracts where we must take in any animal that comes to us.

Over the last 15 years, we have helped an estimated 100,000+ animals find shelter, medical care, and new loving homes through our facility while helping thousands upon thousands of others in our community. This year alone, we anticipate taking in 5,000 homeless animals while serving even more in our local neighborhoods.

MAC holds robust adoption, foster and volunteer programs in addition to rich community efforts such as low-cost spay/neuter (we are only one of two locations in our county that offer this!) , weekly low-cost vaccine and microchip clinics, TNR programs, lost/found pet support programs and much more. Hennen Memorial Fund The Michael P Hennen Memorial Fund was established in memory of Michael P. Hennen and is designed to support those seeking careers in hospitality and the culinary arts.

## Micro School Opportunity Fund The Micro School Opportunity Fund helps students and families with need-based tuition assistance attend one of Chattanooga Christian School's small Kindergarten through 5th grade schools located in underserved neighborhoods. These schools offer a diverse population both ethnically and socio-economically and are in partnership with local churches. The goal is more 6th grade ready students in Chattanooga.

## Nancy Lackey Community Education Fund The Nancy Lackey Community Education Fund was established in 2016 by Usher in memory of his beloved “Nanny” to support art, dance and music programs in Hamilton County schools and leadership initiatives with regional community arts organizations.

MCDANIEL BOULE SCHOLARSHIP has been established to provide financial assistance to academically accomplished African-American male high school seniors who have graduated from a school in Hamilton County, TN, and who have been accepted to accredited four-year colleges or universities.

The awards will be made on the basis of high character, superior academic achievement, leadership skills and a demonstrated willingness to use their talents for the betterment of society. ## Preserve Chattanooga Endowment Fund Preserve Chattanooga Endowment Fund was established to support the charitable activities of Preserve Chattanooga.

## President's Discretionary Fund The President’s Discretionary Fund was established in 2011 by generous donations. This fund enables the Foundation president to respond to community needs and strategic priorities outside of regular funding cycles. The Rotary Charity Fund was established to support the charitable activities of the Chattanooga Downtown Rotary, specifically for activities of the Charity & Club Projects Committee.

## Rotary Club Charity & Projects Endowment Fund The Rotary Club Endowment Fund was established to support the charitable activities of the Chattanooga Downtown Rotary. ## Rotary Club Scholarship Fund The Rotary Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarships in accordance with the procedures set forth in furtherance of charitable and educational purposes.

## Rotary Club Water Fund The Rotary Club Water Fund was established to support the charitable activities of the Chattanooga Downtown Rotary, especially the Water Project. The Sankofa for Civic Engagement Fund (Sankofa) is a giving circle committed to funding and supporting organizations, projects and efforts which improve Chattanooga's African American communities.

Sankofa is grounded in the belief that in order for positive and sustainable change to take place in the Chattanooga community, it must strengthen its efforts to be self-determining. Therefore, Sankofa provides support to community led efforts to develop and implement innovative solutions to the challenges within our community.

Sankofa officially launched in 2015 with the goals to educate its members about the benefits of collective philanthropy, increase awareness of local needs, make investments in organizations that are directly impacting African American children, youth and families, and create a legacy of giving in African American communities as an effective vehicle for social change.

## Seth Lurie Eichenthal Engineering Scholarship Fund The Seth Lurie Eichenthal Engineering Scholarship Fund was established in 2014 in loving memory of a gifted, creative and forward thinking young man. Seth had an extraordinary passion for engineering that was fostered and grew during his years as a student at CSAS.

He graduated from the University of Virginia and obtained a Masters of Science degree in Structural Engineering from Imperial College London, the top structural engineering program in the world. He died tragically at the age of 23 on January 1, 2014, just as his own career in engineering was beginning. This scholarship is open to eligible graduating high school seniors from CSAS who are interested in pursuing a degree in Engineering.

## Strategic Initiatives Fund Designed to provide a flexible and proactive funding source dedicated to grants that have the power and potential to address root causes and create systems level change. The Take Root Fund was established to support the purchase, transportation, planting and maintenance of trees in public spaces within the City of Chattanooga.

## Taraloka Foundation Endowment Fund The Taraloka Foundation creates opportunities for Himalayan girls by providing education, healthcare, and a safe refuge.

## Terrell Owens Foundation **Empowering Youth Through Sport, Health, and Leadership** ## The Hester Family Scholarship Fund Supporting college-bound, resilient, bold, and entrepreneurial minded students from Hamilton County, with particular intent to invest in deserving Hamilton County students whose ambition outpaces their access to opportunity. ## The Langston D. Carter and Malcolm E.

Carter Memorial Scholarship Fund The Langston D. Carter and Malcolm E. Carter Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2020 in loving memory of two young men who loved life but were taken from us too soon.

Langston abruptly lost his life after a short illness at the age of 25 on April 17, 2020. While on earth, he had a positive influence on those who had the opportunity to be in his presence. He was a natural leader, he loved music and carpool karaoke, his smile was infectious, and his energy was carefree and warm.

Malcolm passed in on December 26, 2022. Both young men were natives of Cleveland, Tennessee and graduated from Walker Valley High School and the Cleveland City Schools Adult School, respectively. Langston was active in color guard, musicals, and choir.

After graduation, Langston attended UTC where he was active on campus; he graduated in 2017 with a BA in Communications. At the time of his death, he was a graduate Teacher Assistant in the History Department and pursuing a Master's Degree in History with a concentration in Public History at Middle Tennessee State University. Malcolm enjoyed sports, especially football and played for various teams during high school.

He attended Alabama A&M, but his greatest joy was spending time with his four children Malcolm Evan, Apollo, Adonis, and Remedy. ## The WaterWays Sustainability Fund At WaterWays, we are dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of our aquatic environment through innovative programs and services aimed at engaging children, families, and communities.

Our mission is to connect urban youth with their local watersheds, promote sustainable practices, and empower citizens to protect our waterways. We envision a future where every child knows the beauty of their natural surroundings, every community takes part in stewardship, and every waterway thrives. Together, we can protect our environment and ensure a sustainable future.

The UNFoundation creates unconventional giving opportunities to uncommon projects through unlikely people, you. The face of philanthropy is changing: wealth is nor longer a prerequisite. Our grassroots giving circle redistributes wealth from average Chattanoogans to anyone with a cool idea to make our city better.
