Land Acquisition: Next Level Conservation Trust The Next Level Conservation Trust (NLCT) distributed $25 million appropriated by the General Assembly, the largest single infusion of state dollars into conservation in the state’s history. By the end of 2025, all available NLCT funding has been committed, resulting in the preservation of over 3,500 acres across Indiana.
The NLCT was created to preserve and protect important conservation, recreation, and historic areas throughout Indiana. Property acquired through this fund has or will become part of the public trust to ensure that the land is protected for future generations of Hoosiers to use and enjoy. The NLCT was designed to encourage local participation, so the program required a $3:1 match ($3 of NLCT funds to $1 of match).
The match could be provided by local governmental, nonprofit or philanthropic organizations; private or corporate donors; or by bargain sale. To ensure a variety of impactful projects across the state, no cap per project or sponsoring entity was required. The minimum project size was $100,000 for the NLCT portion of an individual project.
NLCT funds could only be used for the acquisition of land. They could not be used for capital improvements, stewardship, or programming. The program’s flexibility allowed local ownership and management of acquired properties.
