Projects must focus solely on technology development rather than testing biological hypotheses, spanning areas such as biophysics, biomedical technology, computational biosciences, and genetics.
The R21 mechanism supports up to $275,000 over two years, while R01 awards support larger, longer projects up to $500,000 or more per year. Applications are accepted through standard NIH parent announcements. Eligible applicants include investigators at academic institutions, nonprofit research organizations, for-profit companies, and government entities.

Example technologies, which might originate from biomedical, engineering, or physical sciences disciplines, include instruments, devices, processes, algorithms, software, chemicals, biomolecules, or cells that have potential value for generating new basic biomedical research.
The NOFOs support the earliest stages of technology development, establishing feasibility/proof of concept, and prototype validation, and do not support applications that address new biological questions. Investigators are strongly encouraged to contact program staff ( NIGMS_TechDev@nigms. nih.
