NIH Highlights Rare Skin Disease Research as a Priority Area - SID NIH Highlights Rare Skin Disease Research as a Priority Area Apr 15, 2026 | Grants and Fellowships The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) is actively encouraging research into rare skin diseases through its highlighted topic initiative—signaling strong interest in investigator-initiated applications addressing this critical area of need.

An estimated 1 in 10 U.S. residents suffers from a rare disease, most presenting in childhood. For many of these conditions, underlying causes remain unknown or incompletely understood. More striking: approximately 95% of rare diseases lack FDA-approved treatments, contributing to significant childhood morbidity and mortality.

What NIAMS Is Looking For NIAMS is particularly interested in multidisciplinary teams bringing together basic, translational, and clinical scientists to advance understanding and treatment of rare skin diseases.

Priority research areas include: Environmental triggers (pollutants, UV exposure, allergens) of disease development Diagnostic markers and biomarkers for disease progression and treatment response In vivo and in vitro disease models, including organoids, 3D culture systems, and organ-on-a-chip approaches Genetic studies identifying causes of rare skin diseases Molecular and cellular disease pathways and potential therapeutic targets Commonalities across diseases that could enable therapies targeting multiple disorders Repurposing FDA-approved drugs for rare disease treatment Cell and gene therapy approaches Revertant mosaicism as a window into treatment strategies Examples of diseases of interest include albinism, calciphylaxis, Darier disease, dermatomyositis, ectodermal dysplasia, erythropoietic protoporphyria, Hailey-Hailey disease, ichthyoses, pachyonychia congenita, pseudoxanthoma elasticum, pyoderma gangrenosum, recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, and Sturge-Weber syndrome—among others.
