Last updated September 13, 2024 NIH-NHLBI Martha Vaughan Fellowship - How to apply Applying for the NIH-NHLBI Vaughan Fellowship PhD candidates: Expected or actual degree conferral between May 2024 and May 2026 MD candidates: Expected or actual completion of residency or specialty training between May 2024 and May 2026 Terminal degree (MD or PhD) from US institution Current NHLBI fellows are not eligible to apply Criteria for selection of Vaughan Fellows Potential for training and growth during the duration of the Vaughan fellowship Desire to perform postdoctoral research in specific NHLBI Intramural labs on the main Bethesda, MD NIH campus or in Framingham, MA Potential to mentor other scientists and improve the scientific community, evidenced by current activities Participating Investigators Application and review process Applications will be evaluated by a committee of NHLBI scientists, and finalists will be notified approximately a month after the application deadline.
Vaughan finalists will then coordinate with investigators within NHLBI to arrange a laboratory in which to perform their research. Investigators participating in the Vaughan program can be found at https://www. nhlbi.

CV, including description of: Research and publications 1-page description of graduate research and its major implications Cover letter describing (maximum two pages) Interest in the NHLBI, including the names of one or more potential mentors The Vaughan fellowship application is due February 1, 2025 .
Submit application materials Background Check: All fellowship offers are contingent on your ability to successfully pass a federal background check, which is required for logical and physical access to NIH facilities and systems. As part of the clearance process, you will be asked questions about a variety of topics including your citizenship, criminal history, and other personal information.
One specific question you will be asked is “In the last year, have you used, possessed, supplied, or manufactured illegal drugs? ” This question pertains to the use of controlled substances or drugs as defined under federal law. Please be aware that while marijuana may be legal or decriminalized within your home jurisdiction it remains illegal under U.S. federal law.
The use, possession, supply, or manufacture of marijuana may preclude you from obtaining the necessary clearances to participate in NIH intramural training programs, even if you were initially offered a position.
