Product Development Award Guide - NIHR RSS Toolbox RSS Guide to NIHR i4i Product Development Awards This guide has been developed to help you to understand and address the requirements and expectations of the NIHR Invention for Innovation Product Development Award (i4i PDA) funding programme. However, much of the content of this guide is applicable to other i4i funding schemes such as Connect and Innovation Catalyst awards.
The guide is also relevant to many other similar translation research funding awards, such as from UK Research and Innovation and the Wellcome Trust. The NIHR Invention for Innovation (i4i) Product Development Award (PDA) Programme The NIHR i4i programme supports the development of medical devices, in vitro diagnostics and high-impact patient-focused digital health technologies.
Innovations will already have demonstrated proof-of-concept (at translational readiness level 3 or higher) and have a clear pathway to adoption and commercialisation. The purpose of the PDA scheme is to: “.. support collaborative projects, aiming to de-risk innovations by funding preclinical and clinical product development and real-world evaluation to generate evidence for NHS or social care adoption.
Research proposals must address an area of unmet need and show a clear pathway towards adoption and commercialisation, thereby making the innovations more attractive for follow-on funding or commercial investment . ” If after reading the scope and remit of the PDA programme you are uncertain whether to you or your project idea are eligible, you can email the i4i team at i4i@nihr. ac.

This section addresses how applicants should set out the need for the research and innovation, including the health and care benefits and commercial potential. This section considers key elements of the evaluation of the technology, including economics, intellectual property, regulatory issues, public involvement, research inclusion, and knowledge mobilisation.
Research Project Plan: Non-Work Packages This section considers how applicants should approach the plain English summary, the research aims and objectives, risk management, project timelines, and project costs. Research Project Plan: Work Packages This section gives examples of possible work packages within the proposed project. This section describes the pathway from inputs to impact.
