Nonprofit Capacity Building Grants

Nonprofit Capacity Building Grants is sponsored by The Turley Foundation. Supports organizational development and capacity building for nonprofits, including funding for external evaluations.

Capacity Building Grants provide funds to nonprofits to assist with organizational and financial stability, improved governance, and growth — allowing them to carry out their missions more effectively. This funding is designed to support an organization’s internal effectiveness and long-term stability, rather than funding a specific program or singular service.

Our grants will fund activities that will build and maintain organization-level infrastructure and governance.

Examples of eligible projects: CEO/executive succession planning Strategic collaboration, mergers, or acquisitions Governance, policies, and procedures Culture and Belonging efforts Branding and web redesign Evaluation and data organization efforts Benefits and compensation assessment and planning Organizations must be determined a charitable organization in good standing under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, public entities or other charitable, educational or faith-based organizations.

Organizations must have a physical location in one of the following 11 counties in the Midlands: Calhoun, Clarendon, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Newberry, Orangeburg, Richland, Saluda, or Sumter. Organizations led by or primarily serving underrepresented populations, or those located outside Richland County, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Organizations must have at least one full year of operation at the time of submitting the grant application.

Examples of Non-Eligible Activities Routine operating expenses of the organization, including staffing costs and/or hiring grant writers Direct service program implementation – this project should benefit the organization, not your service population Direct marketing costs/and or materials Data migration and other operational costs for a donor or client database Fundraising projects—including events Endowment or capital campaigns Individual conference registration Costs associated with the creation of a new nonprofit organization Completed projects or proposals that have begun implementation Certifications or tuition fees Applicants may request up to $10,000 .

Funds are often approved to hire a consultant. If working with a consultant, we recommend discussing your needs with a consultant (or two) and having an idea of who you will work with at the time of application. A contract is not required as part of the application.

November 1 – Application Opens November 30 – Application Closes Early February – Applicants notified of Application Status September 30 – Project Ends Information for Current Grant Recipients Current awardees will submit their reports in the grant portal. Your original application, grant agreement, and any other documents related to your grant are saved on your organization’s dashboard.
