The NSF Foundational Research in Robotics FRR program solicitation PD 20-144Y jointly led by the CISE and ENG Directorates supports foundational research on robotic systems that exhibit significant levels of both computational capability and physical complexity.
Robots are defined as intelligence embodied in an engineered construct with the ability to process information sense plan and move within or substantially alter its working environment. Proposals must focus on endowing a robot or class of robots with new and useful capabilities or significantly enhancing existing capabilities while addressing fundamental gaps in robotics science.
The program supports the full range of fundamental engineering and computer science research challenges arising in robotics including AI-driven perception planning manipulation locomotion and human-robot interaction. Physical experimental validation is encouraged. This is distinct from NSF NRI 3.

The NSF CISE Future Computing Research (Future CoRe) program supports research in computing and communication foundations, intelligent systems, and network systems. The program funds innovative research that advances the frontiers of computing including artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics. This is one of NSF's largest computing research programs with $280 million in total budget. Projects can address fundamental computing challenges, novel AI architectures, scalable intelligent systems, and next-generation network infrastructure.
