Ocean Biogeochemistry Virtual Institute (OBVI) - Schmidt Sciences Ocean Biogeochemistry Virtual Institute (OBVI) OBVI advances understanding of ocean carbon cycling and ecosystem resilience across scales—from animal guts to global oceans—through integrated observations, models, and platforms The ocean plays a profound role in regulating Earth’s climate and acts as a vast repository for carbon and heat.
Studies to date reveal that the ocean has absorbed and stored nearly one-third of the carbon dioxide that humans have emitted over the last century. The question of whether it can continue to do so at the same rate is one of the most critical ones we face today.
Ocean biogeochemists have developed a broad understanding of how the ocean influences climate, as well as how the ocean sequesters carbon from the Earth’s atmosphere, and the consequences of this increased carbon storage for marine ecosystems.
We are lacking, however, a deeper fundamental and mechanistic understanding of the physical, chemical, biological, and geological processes that govern the cycling and storage of carbon in the ocean. We have much to learn about the connections between carbon and other elemental cycles, and the specific roles that marine life plays in shaping those relationships.
Current gaps in knowledge impede our ability to predict the extent to which the ocean can continue to sequester carbon dioxide, as well as our ability to predict the structure, function, and resilience of marine ecosystems in a rapidly warming world.

Schmidt Sciences opened a 'Scaling AI Safety for a Multi-Agent World' program with awards up to $1 million and an August 8, 2026 deadline. Against a backdrop of federal research slowdowns, here is why private science philanthropy matters more than ever, how these funders differ from federal agencies, and how researchers should approach them.
Read articleSchmidt Marine Technology Partners funds the development and deployment of ocean technology — sustainable fisheries, ocean observation, habitat restoration, and pollution — with grants typically $100,000 to $400,000. The initial proposal window closes July 31, 2026. Here's what makes this funder different and how to write for it.
Read articleSchmidt Sciences' 2026 Science of Trustworthy AI RFP closes May 17 with two funding tiers — up to $1M (Tier 1) and $1–5M+ (Tier 2) over 1–3 years, with a 10% indirect cost cap. The three research aims target misalignment under distribution shift, predictive-validity evaluations, and oversight of superhuman systems. Here is why the structure favors team-based proposals.
