OHF: Community Engagement Grants is sponsored by Obici Healthcare Foundation. The Obici Healthcare Foundation offers one-time Community Engagement Grants to support nonprofit initiatives that enhance the health of local residents. These grants are for programs that address community health needs, promote wellness, and improve health awareness.

The Foundation prioritizes collaborative projects that innovate and sustain long-term health improvements in Virginia and North Carolina.

Community Engagement Grants support programs, services, and activities that engage the community and are available to community members and help improve health and well-being. Micro-Capacity Building Grants support efforts that strengthen an organization’s systems and the people who carry out its work, helping them effectively advance their mission.

These one-time grants are offered on a rolling basis and support efforts that address local health needs, expand access to essential programs and services, and strengthen nonprofit organizations. Priority is given to collaborative, community-driven approaches that respond to local needs.

Together, these grants help nonprofits deepen and sustain their impact, strengthen their organizations, and continue serving the communities of Western Tidewater and Gates County. Eligible organizations may apply for only one of these grant types per fiscal year (April 1–March 31) and typically receive one grant during that time—either a Community Engagement Grant or a Micro-Capacity Building Grant, not both.

Community Engagement Grants Community Engagement Grants support programs, services, and activities that directly benefit community members and respond to local health needs.

Requests may include efforts that: Encourage physical activity and wellness Increase health awareness and knowledge Expand access to essential health programs, services, and resources Support activities or initiatives that help individuals and families improve their health and well-being Requests should be clearly connected to the organization’s work and aligned with community needs.

Micro-Capacity Building Grants Micro-Capacity Building Grants support organizations in strengthening how they carry out their work.

Requests may include efforts that: Improve systems, technology, or internal operations that support how the organization functions Strengthen financial management practices or internal processes Support the people who carry out the organization’s work through training, coaching, or learning opportunities Strengthen planning, fundraising, communications, or partnerships, including working with consultants or experts to support organizational growth Requests should be clearly connected to the organization’s work and aligned with its goals, supporting its ability to grow, adapt, or address challenges.

Applications for Community Engagement Grants and Micro-Capacity Building Grants are accepted on a rolling basis during the Foundation’s fiscal year (April–March) and reviewed until funds are exhausted. Awards typically range from $500 to $5,000 per organization per fiscal year.

Funding decisions are based on alignment with the Foundation’s priorities, the strength and feasibility of the request, the organization’s ability to carry it out, and the availability of funds. While not required, they can help you select the most appropriate grant type, strengthen your application, and navigate the process more smoothly.

Applicants must submit a copy of their nonprofit organization’s IRS determination letter. Applications are generally reviewed and processed within approximately 30 business days from submission.

Organizations are encouraged to consider this timeframe when planning their requests, as funding decisions and grant payments may not be available sooner.
