Open Mind 2026 now open for groundbreaking, outside-the-box ideas | NWO Dare to color outside the lines Are you working on a wild idea that could change the world or a creative solution that breaks through existing frameworks? Then this is the stage for you. Open Mind is looking for bold, high-risk, high-gain research ideas that challenge conventional thinking and can bring about real change.
Whether you are developing ways to generate sustainable energy (such as Getting energy from concrete ) or want to improve mental health with technology (such as Recognizing depression with speech analysis ), we want to hear from you! Open Mind calls on researchers to think outside the box and contribute original and creative ideas that can have a lasting and meaningful impact on society.
What's new in 2026: more budget, more opportunities The Open Mind 2026 call has a total budget of €1,000,000 available. A maximum of ten grants will be awarded, with a maximum of €100,000 (including VAT) per grant. The funding can be used for personnel and materials for a period of maximum one year.
The emphasis remains on originality, creativity, quality, and societal impact. The deadline for submitting a research proposal is Tuesday, March 10, 2026, before 14:00:00 CET. On Thursday , January 22, 2026, at 14:00:00 CET , NWO will host an online information session.
