Chile - Open Study/Research Middle East & North Africa Open Study/Research Award This award supports U.S. graduate students conducting research in Chile across all disciplines at accredited Chilean universities and research institutions.

The program strengthens academic exchange between Chile and the United States by promoting institutionally grounded research placements within a structured and internationally recognized academic environment. Preference is given to Master’s and doctoral candidates undertaking thesis or dissertation research that requires academic collaboration or fieldwork in Chile.

Graduating seniors and recent graduates may also be considered when proposing a clearly defined research project combined with audited coursework aligned with their methodological needs. Coursework must be negotiated directly with the host institution, and no academic credit is granted for audited classes.

Successful proposals must demonstrate a clear academic rationale for conducting research in Chile and strong alignment with the selected host institution. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact prospective host institutions in advance to discuss feasibility and academic fit. Early communication strengthens proposals and ensures meaningful institutional integration.

The duration and exact timing of the research stay will be determined collaboratively between the grantee and the host institution, taking into account academic calendars and project needs. All grantees must arrive prior to or at the beginning of March 2028 to conduct research during the full academic year. Grant dates must correspond to the academic year in Chile (March to November). The grant period starts with an obligatory enhancement organized by the Fulbright Commission in early March 2028.

While you may note a preference for other start dates in your application, exceptions are exceedingly rare, given only for extraordinary research conditions (e.g., winter season glacier study); as such, after your application has been approved, any dates not starting in March must be approved in writing by the Commission in Chile. The in-country orientation usually takes place during March.

This award is designed for academically motivated graduate students seeking to conduct research in Chile within a structured and collaborative institutional environment. Preference is given to Master’s and doctoral candidates whose proposed projects are directly connected to their thesis or dissertation research and require meaningful academic engagement in Chile.

At-Large candidates who have recently completed a terminal Master’s degree may also be considered. Applicants holding only a bachelor’s degree are welcome to apply, provided they demonstrate relevant professional or research experience that supports the feasibility of their proposed project.

Strong candidates will present a clearly articulated research plan that demonstrates why Chile is essential to the successful completion of their work. Proposals should outline a compelling academic rationale, demonstrate potential binational impact, and show thoughtful alignment with the selected host institution.

Establishing affiliation with a Chilean university or research center before applying is critical, as meaningful institutional integration and academic mentorship are central components of the program. Proficiency in Spanish is beneficial for academic and social integration, though it is not required.
