Operation School Bell is sponsored by Assistance League of Houston. This program provides uniforms, school clothing, and backpacks for school children to help boost students' confidence, attendance, and academic success. Local school districts refer families in need.

National Strength – Local Focus Assistance League of Houston began in 1966 as the 31st chapter of National Assistance League® founded in 1919 as Assistance League of Southern California and incorporated as National Assistance League in 1935. Each chapter develops philanthropic programs to meet the needs of their local community.

So, while we benefit from the full strength of our national organization, our funds are raised and spent locally to meet the growing needs of our community here in Houston. Operation School Bell® No child should have to feel defined by poverty, yet many students in Houston lack appropriate clothing for school. Each year, local districts refer families in need, and providing new clothes helps boost students’ confidence, attendance, and academic success. Operation School Bell, a national program of Assistance League, supports these families by supplying new clothing and school essentials.

In Houston, the program serves students across multiple districts, helping them feel prepared, confident, and ready to reach their full potential. Education is one of the strongest defenses against poverty, yet many students struggle to see a bright future when financial barriers stand in their way.

Assistance League of Houston Scholarship Program supports graduating seniors with financial need and academic promise across several local schools. It also contributes to Houston City College’s VAST program, which offers vocational training, career preparation, and support services. By investing in students, the program fosters hope, financial stability, and a stronger future workforce.

Holidays can be especially difficult for families with critically ill children, who often face challenges that overshadow celebration. Assistance League of Houston hosts a special holiday party for families at Texas Children’s Hospital, offering a much-needed break from their daily struggles. Children enjoy games, activities, and visits from Santa, superheroes, and beloved characters.

This event brings joy, comfort, and a sense of normalcy during a challenging time. Low literacy and poverty are closely linked, as children who cannot read proficiently by fourth grade are far less likely to graduate on time. Learning to read early is essential, because it lays the foundation for all future learning.

Homes without books or reading support can perpetuate this cycle of illiteracy. To address this, books are provided and read aloud in classrooms each month, with students receiving copies to share at home. Assistance League Volunteers Dedicated volunteers play an important role in supporting local schools and community programs throughout Houston.

Members and community participants give their time and talents to assist with educational activities, special events, and outreach efforts. Through volunteer service, the program strengthens community connections and helps meet the needs of children and families across the area. Our members get out into the community and learn more about the students and parents at the schools with which we work.

Donate to Assistance League of Houston Assistance League of Houston is a member-based, all-volunteer 501(c)3 nonprofit organization open to all interested in volunteering, who share a commitment to community service and a desire to help others in their need. We have five wonderful programs that need your help! Getting involved in our programs is very uplifting.

Operation School Bell provides uniforms/school clothing and backpacks for school children, Scholarships gives much needed tuition help to students, Assistance League Reads reads to young children and gives them books for their home library, and Celebration of Giving hosts a party with gifts and fun for children and their families that are being treated at the Texas Medical Center.
