Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant THOMSON -- McDuffie County announces the award of a Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant in the amount of $700,000 by the National Park Service for rehabilitation of downtown Thomson commercial historic buildings.
The grant is made possible by the Historic Preservation Fund that uses revenue from federal offshore oil and gas leases to support a broad range of preservation projects without spending tax dollars.
The Paul Bruhn Revitalization Grant subgrant program, named in honor of the late preservation leader Paul Bruhn from Vermont, focuses as a locally stewarded program that aims to stimulate economic development in rural communities through the rehabilitation of historic buildings. An application process will be provided as the National Park Service approves the program guidelines and application process for a subgrant program.
Eligible buildings for funding must be contributing to the Thomson Commercial Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places. All projects must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
The program will support bricks and mortar exterior and interior rehabilitation projects of historic buildings including roofing, systems update, window restoration and storm windows, façade rehabilitation, and other work related to code and ADA compliance. The grant funds will require matching and a preservation easement.
A public information meeting will be held on February 20, 2026, at the McDuffie County Government Center Complex, in the Commissioner’s Room, from 2:00 – 3:00 p. m. to discuss the program and how to apply for funds.
