PLRC P&F Grants – Pittsburgh Liver Research Center Pilot & Feasibility Program Director The Pittsburgh Liver Research Center sponsors Pilot and Feasibility grants every year in basic, clinical and translational research that fit the mission of the NIDDK and the PLRC.
Pilot and Feasibility Grants Pilot and Feasibility Grants fund new initiatives and/or support new investigators who are pursuing liver-related research that should lead to R01-type funding or other extramural support at a later date.
These awards are for one year, and they provide support for investigators to collect preliminary data sufficient to support a future extramural grant application for independent research and/or to test a novel hypothesis. They are not intended for large projects by established investigators, or supporting or supplementing the ongoing funded research of an investigator.
Proposed projects must be framed within the scientific mission of the NIDDK. Projects whose primary alignment is with another NIH Institute or Center (for example, alcohol-related research aligned with NIAAA or cancer research aligned with NCI) should articulate the digestive or liver disease question that places the work within the NIDDK mission. Projects that will utilize the PLRC Scientific Cores will be given preference.
A clear statement on which cores will be utilized should be explicitly stated in the main application. Applicants must fall into one of the following categories of eligibility. Please note that this is a tiered priority scale, with preference given to junior investigators.
Three groups of faculty are eligible to apply for Pilot and Feasibility Grants. New Investigators without independent grant support (excluding career development awards) seeking to establish independence in the field of academic liver research. This category of applicant will be given preference.
Letter of intent (see below) should elaborate on your career stage and plans. Established Investigators from other areas of biomedical research interested in applying their expertise to liver health or disease research. The area should be distinct from current funded research and P&F funds should not be supplementing or extending an investigator’s ongoing funded projects.

PLRC & Community Liver Alliance Co-sponsored P&F Award – This award will continue to be available to applicants, subject to funding availability. Special consideration will be given to those who are proposing research addressing liver diseases in underserved communities, healthcare disparities, or pathogenesis of sexually dimorphic diseases.
