Point Break is a Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) solicitation that funds the development and demonstration of advanced laser communication technology for contested air and space domains.
DIU is seeking solutions in two areas: development of low-SWaP multi-waveform lasercom optical communication terminals using multi-chip packages capable of seamless cross-waveform data transport, and demonstration of high-throughput optical communications between a proliferated Low Earth Orbit constellation and an airborne terminal in flight. Applicants may respond to one or both areas of interest.
Eligible respondents are companies with a proven track record of commercial viability and commercially available products, both in the U.S. and internationally across allied countries. Award amounts are per official notice.

US Defense Innovation Unit - Point Break - Defence Science Institute US Defense Innovation Unit – Point Break US Defense Innovation Unit – Point Break DIU is seeking innovations to accelerate the insertion of laser communication technology into contested air and space domains.
Specifically, DIU is interested in Development and demonstration of multi-waveform lasercom optical communication terminals (OCTs) and orchestration capable of enabling seamless data transport across different waveform and network boundaries. The OCTs will be low Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) and utilize a multi-chip package (MCP) capable of multi-waveform lasercom.
Demonstration of a reliable and high throughput optical communications between a commercially owned and operated proliferated Low Earth Orbit (pLEO) constellation and an airborne lasercom terminal in flight. Responders can submit solutions for one or both areas of interest. Responses are due 17 May 2026 .
