Research - British Society of Geomorphology The Research Sub-Committee drives the research missions of the Society. It co-ordinates the programme of meetings, conference sponsorship, research grants and awards administered by the Society. It makes recommendations on the award of Society grants.
It also makes recommendations following the nomination of candidates for the Dick Chorley, Linton Award and Gordon Warwick Award. It recommends the recipient of the Wiley Award and other awards that the Society might from time to time add to its portfolio. Check out the Awards and Grants on offer.
The BSG makes the following annual awards: David Linton Award (leading contribution to the discipline over a sustained period); Gordon Warwick Award (excellence in geomorphological research by someone within 15 years experience); Lynne Frostick Award (outstanding contribution in geomorphology outreach, education and engagement); Dick Chorley Award (best published paper based on PhD research); Mike Kirkby Award (best paper published in the Earth Surfaces Processes and Landforms journal); Fiona Kirkby Award (outstanding contribution to the Earth Surfaces Processes and Landforms journal); Marjorie Sweeting Award (best undergraduate dissertation); and the Bernie Smith Best Postgraduate Poster and Talk (at the BSG Conference).
Research grants are awarded to individuals, and applications may be made by both postgraduate and non-postgraduate BSG members. All successful research grant applications are expected to contribute to the delivery of the BSG missions to support scientific excellence in geomorphology. Prospective applicants should note that the BSG will only accept one application per applicant per funding round and that applicants can only hold one grant at any given time (with the exception of the Carer Support Grant and PGR funding to attend the BSG Annual… Postgraduate Member Grants Postgraduate Research Grant Grants of up to £2000 are available to fund research projects proposed by postgraduate members of the society.

Postgraduate Conference Attendance Grant Conference Attendance Grants are available to help BSG postgraduate members who wish to attend disciplinary conferences in geomorphology (separate funding is available associated with BSG Annual Meetings). Early Career Researcher Grant Up to £5000 is available to pump-prime geomorphological research undertaken by an Early Career Researcher (ECR). Decolonising Geomorphology The British Society for Geomorphology invites applications to a ‘Decolonising Geomorphology’ grant, up to £5000 is available in the September grants round for this purpose. For more information on the Decolonising Geomorphology Grant click here .
The BSG has instituted a Carer Support Grant, which will help carers undertake dedicated geomorphology-related academic activities (e.g. attending conferences, meetings, workshops; or conducting field-based research; or partaking in national/international internship) that they might not otherwise be able to undertake because of their care responsibilities.
The proposed grant scheme offers up to £1000 in support, which can be used towards any additional caring costs incurred by the carer whilst undertaking the academic activity. BSG sponsors events/sessions/keynotes at a wide range of conferences (note this is not support for individuals). Geomorphological Outreach Grant Grants of up to £1000 are available to full members of the society who would like to organise geomorphological outreach activities involving schools, the general public or industry.
