Expected Outcome: Proposals are expected to contribute to all following points: Significantly reduced EU dependency on imported battery-grade raw materials, specifically emerging technologies and carbon-based electrode materials. Established European value chains for next-generation battery materials, enhancing the EU's technological leadership and strategic autonomy. Scope: Proposals under this topic are expected to address all aspects for one of the following categories: 1. Sustainable Processing and Refining of next generation batteries-grade Material, delivering all of the following: Development and validation of innovative, environmentally friendly refining technologies for producing battery-grade metals and materials suitable for next-generation battery chemistries. This covers raw and advanced electrode materials for the components of sodium-ion batteries or beyond generation 3 [1] lithium-ion batteries Development of processes achieving significant reductions in carbon and ecological footprint, emissions of pollutants, energy usage, and chemical inputs. The selected processes should not negatively impact any of the aspects above or cause significant harm. Validation of economic viability, environmental sustainability, and technological robustness of the proposed refining and processing solutions. OR: 2. Utilising Bio-based Raw Materials for Battery Electrode Materials delivering on all of the following: Development of synthetic graphite and/or alternative carbonous materials for battery components derived from bio-based European feedstocks (e.g., biomass, agricultural and forestry residues, lignocellulosic materials). Inactive components such as binders may also be included. Comprehensive characterization and validation of developed electrode materials in sodium-ion and lithium-ion battery cells, demonstrating comparable or superior performance to conventional graphite electrodes, specifically targeting cycle stability, energy density, and charge/discharge rates. Demonstration of credible pathways for pilot-scale production pathways for bio-based electrode materials including a clear techno-economic analysis and LCA/LCC impact assessment. The Commission initiative for Safe and Sustainable by Design [2] (SSbD) sets a framework for assessing the safety and sustainability of chemicals and materials which should be considered as a reference for project proposals. This topic implements the co-programmed European Partnership on Batteries (Batt4EU). As such, projects resulting from this topic will be expected to report on the results to the European Partnership on Batteries (Batt4EU) in support of the monitoring of its KPIs. null Activities are expected to achieve TRL 4-5 by the end of the project – see General Annex B. EIC 2026 Pathfinder Open is sponsored by European Commission — Horizon Europe. Expected Impact: The expected output of your project is the proof of principle that the main ideas of the envisioned future technology are feasible, thus validating its scientific and technological basis. Project results should include top-level scientific publications in open access. While your vision is expected to be worthwhile because of its potential for future impact, for instance to create new markets, improve our lives, or provide solutions for global challenges, these are not expected to be achieved in the course of your EIC Pathfinder Open project. However, you are expected to take the necessary measures in the course of the project to allow future uptake to take place. This includes: an adequate formal protection of the generated Intellectual Property (IP), a plan for future exploitation and an assessment of relevant aspects related to regulation, certification, and standardisation. In addition, you are encouraged to involve and empower in your team key actors that have the potential to become future leaders in their field such as excellent early-career researchers or promising high-tech SMEs, including start-ups. Your project should reinforce their mind-set for targeted research and development aimed at high impact applied results. This will strengthen Europe’s capacity for exploiting the scientific discoveries made in Europe throughout the steps to market success or for solving global challenges. You are particularly encouraged to empower female researchers in your project and to achieve gender balance among your work package leaders. Objective: The overall objective of the EIC Pathfinder for advanced research is to develop the scientific basis to underpin breakthrough technologies. It provides support for the earliest stages of scientific, technological or deep tech research and development. Pathfinder projects aim to build on new, cutting-edge directions in science and technology to disrupt a field and a market or create new opportunities by realising innovative technological solutions through: ‘EIC Pathfinder Open’, open to support projects in any field of science, technology or application without predefined thematic priorities. ‘EIC Pathfinder Challenges’ to support coherent portfolios of projects within predefined thematic areas with the aim to achieve specific objectives for each Challenge. Scope: Do you have an ambitious vision for a novel future technology that could make a real difference to our lives? Do you see a plausible way of achieving the scientific breakthrough that will make this technology possible? Can you imagine collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of researchers and innovators to validate the scientific basis of the future technology, realise a proof of principle, and explore paths to impact? ERC ADVANCED GRANTS is sponsored by European Commission — Horizon Europe. Expected Outcome: Objectives and profile of the ERC Advanced Grant Principal Investigator The objective of the Advanced Grant is to support excellent Principal Investigators that are established research leaders. An ERC Advanced Grant Principal Investigator is expected to be an active researcher with a track record of significant research achievements. Size of ERC Advanced Grants Advanced Grants may be awarded up to a maximum of EUR 2 500 000 for a period of 5 years . The maximum amount of the grants is reduced pro rata temporis for projects of a shorter duration. Additional funding up to EUR 1 000 000 * can be requested to cover further eligible costs (e.g. start-up costs, major equipment, access to large facilities, major experimental and field work costs) when these are necessary to carry out the proposed work. The requests for additional funding must be duly justified in the proposal. Additional funding is not subject to pro rata temporis reduction for projects of shorter duration. * Except for Principal Investigators in Starting, Consolidator, or Advanced Grant re-locating to the EU or an Associated Country from elsewhere to take up their ERC grant. In this case, the maximum additional funding shall be EUR 2 000 000. HORIZON-JU-EDCTP3-2026-Scientific Leadership Man SSA Prize is sponsored by European Commission — Horizon Europe. Objective: 1. Background The EDCTP Prizes 2026-2027 are recognition prizes funded under Horizon Europe. Prizes are financial contributions given as rewards following the publication of a contest. A ‘recognition prize’ is used to recognise past achievements and outstanding work after it has been performed, whereas an ‘inducement prize’ is used to spur investment in a given direction, by specifying a target prior to the performance of the work. Applications will have to clearly state the involvement of the applicants in the research and innovation activities within the remit of the Global Health EDCTP3 programme. Applicants will have to provide proof of eligibility and a written presentation of the achievements, which will be presented to an independent panel of experts for evaluation. The amounts of the prizes are specified in section 3. They are not linked to the costs incurred by the winner. 2. EDCTP3 Prizes 2026 and related award criteria The prizes will be awarded to the entry that, in the opinion of the independent expert jury, demonstrates having best addressed the cumulative criteria specified under the respective descriptions below. Applications will be graded on a total of 100 points. Where relevant, the number of points for each award criterion is indicated below. Scientific Leadership Prize (four prizes) These prizes will be awarded to four different profiles and aim to recognise growing mid-career scientists: - Two Scientific Leadership Prizes (one woman and one man) for researchers who are permanent residents of an EU Member State or a country associated with the Horizon Europe programme; - Two Scientific Leadership Prizes (one woman and one man) for researchers who are permanent residents of a sub-Saharan African country which is a constituent state of the EDCTP Association. Award criteria These prizes are awarded to the entries that best address the following cumulative criteria based on their application, that should also include a letter of support from other member(s) of the research community: Scientific contribution and excellence: Contestants should have made significant achievements in their field and will continue to be leaders in their research field (50 points). Impact: Contestants should have made major contributions to the objectives of the Global Health EDCTP3 programme to strengthen research capacity in sub-Saharan Africa and to support South-South and North-South networking (50 points). 3.
