Promoting Healthy Aging Through Social Connection "Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty." Research confirms that social connection is essential to the health and well-being of Americans over sixty-five. Yet nearly one in four older adults is considered socially isolated.
The health consequences of isolation are comparable to those of high blood pressure, obesity, and physical inactivity—linked to as much as a fifty percent increase in early mortality. Those most at risk for social isolation include seniors who are unpartnered, live alone, lack reliable transportation, have limited English proficiency, care for disabled family members, or lack access to community resources.
There are proven programs and promising solutions that can ameliorate social isolation and help older adults stay active, socially engaged and connected to a sense of purpose. Still, innovation is urgently needed. By making community programs more available, accessible, culturally relevant, and welcoming, we can foster social connections and improve the quality of life of our most vulnerable elders.
The Joseph & Vera Long Foundation supports organizations that create opportunities for seniors to engage socially and meaningfully, and that develop effective strategies to combat social isolation. By funding impactful programs and encouraging innovation, we aim to help more low-income seniors living independently become socially connected, supported, and engaged in their communities—leading to better health and well-being.
