Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme | GIZ Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PREEEP) (Completed) Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit u. Entwicklung Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development Uganda is richly endowed with natural resources.
In terms of energy, the country has abundant biomass, including large quantities of non-woody biomass and water resources. It also has excellent potential as far as the generation of solar, geothermal and wind energy is concerned. Water and biomass make the biggest contributions to the energy demands of Uganda’s population.
The unsustainable and inefficient use of the available resources has, however, left the country with an insufficient energy supply. The programme supports the process of increasing the amount of electricity from renewable sources and improves its accessibility as well as energy efficiency.
The programme works through six commissions: Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme (PREEEP) , which aims to improve the framework conditions for increased access to clean energy in rural and peri-urban areas. Pro Mini-Grids , which promote the use of mini-grids for rural electrification.
Energising Development (EnDev) , which supports market development and improved framework conditions in Uganda to increase access to sustainable, efficient, and high-quality clean cooking and solar energy technologies and services.
Green People’s Energy (GBE) , which seeks to improve access to decentralised renewable energy systems for farmers, enterprises, cooperatives, and social institutions in rural areas through investment and other means. Energy Solutions for Displacement Settings (ESDS) , which provides advisory services and supports market-based solutions for access to sustainable cooking energy and electricity.
Global Carbon Market , which supports the Ugandan government and private sector in using the carbon market. The programme also implements activities through supplementary projects , namely, DIAPOL-CE – Policy Dialogue and Knowledge Management on Low Emission Development Strategies, Global Energy Transformation (GET. transform), FAIR Forward – Artificial Intelligence for all and the Project Development Programme (PDP).
