AIQAT is Qatar's first dedicated national AI research grant scheme, launched by the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to fund research against priorities named in Qatar's National AI Strategy.
It funds up to QAR 1,000,000 per project over two years across three declared priority areas: AI-assisted healthcare covering diagnostics and patient data analysis, AI-assisted education covering personalised learning, and AI-assisted tourism covering recommendation systems, logistics and visitor analytics.
Submissions opened 14 January 2026 and closed 11 March 2026, with awards announced June-July 2026 and projects commencing in the second half of 2026.
The defining feature, and the reason it matters as a signal rather than just a funding line, is that it is closed to everyone outside Qatar: the lead principal investigator must hold a terminal degree and be affiliated with an approved Qatari research institution, which in practice means Qatar University, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, Texas A&M at Qatar, Carnegie Mellon Qatar, or a Qatar Foundation institute such as QCRI.
International researchers can join only as collaborators on a Qatar-led team. Applicants should treat the three priority areas as binding rather than indicative: this is a strategy-implementation instrument, and proposals pursuing foundational AI methods with no healthcare, education or tourism application are poorly matched.
