Peter Kiewit was a lifelong Omaha resident, grew his family’s general contracting business, and directed that his personal estate be used to establish a foundation. The foundation aims to “create opportunities for people to live in and help build strong and vibrant communities, achieve economic success, and enjoy a high quality of life.

” The Peter Kiewit Foundation pursues grantmaking through several priority areas and invests in programs, general operations, capacity building, and policy development. It funds local efforts for higher education, youth, economic growth and opportunity, and thriving communities.

Grants for Higher Education and Youth Development The Kiewit Foundation supports education through two separate programs, each focused on a different student demographic. College Access and Success grants support programs that help prepare students for and provide access to higher education opportunities, as well as increase matriculation and graduation rates for students located in the Omaha area.

Youth Development grants support out-of-school learning programs for K-12 youth from underserved communities. Previous education grantees include $2. 7 million to University of Nebraska to support the Rural Health Education Building, $500,000 to Central Community College, and $75,000 to Nebraska Children and Families Foundation to support the ELO Engineering Pathways Initiative.

Grants for Work and Economic Development The foundation’s Economic Development and Opportunities priority area is divided into grants for downtown Omaha, Omaha’s neighborhoods, and the city’s workforce. Strengthen Omaha’s Core grants invest in programs that improve the quality of life for residents of the downtown area.

Neighborhood Stabilization grants invest in capital and catalyst projects that seek to revitalize the neighborhoods in East Omaha that are experiencing “decline and disinvestment. ” Jobs and Workforce grants support projects that seek to increase access to employment opportunities and workforce development programs in economically disadvantaged communities.

Grants for Community Development While all of the priority areas focus on the greater Omaha area, two go directly toward community improvement and development projects. Kiewit’s Quality of Place Amenities grants invest in “community amenity projects that foster community connection. ” Specifically, the foundation prioritizes support for “high-quality” civic, recreational, and cultural amenities.

Community Foundation Capacity grants invest in capacity building for community foundations in Greater Nebraska. Past local grantees include $5 million to Community Information Trust to support the new Omaha Central Public Library, $750,000 to Omaha Discovery Trust, and $500,000 to the YMCA of McCook expansion and renovation project. Grants typically range between about $5,000 and $150,000, although they occasionally go significantly higher for special projects. The foundation awarded over $33 million in grants in a recent year and held more than $477 million in assets. Grantmaking focuses on the entire state of Nebraska.

It gives special priority to causes that affect the Omaha region of the state. The foundation also supports efforts in Western Iowa within a 100-mile radius of Omaha. Because the foundation intends to sunset by 2030 , it no longer accepts unsolicited proposals or requests for funding.
